ISSUES AT MY WORKPLACE
I work in a private hospital where healthcare services are provided around the clock. Because of this, medical staff are required to work in shifts especially in critical areas like the Emergency Department and Intensive Care Unit (ICU). Working night shifts will affect the normal physiology of the human body and mind. This leads to many life style issues like hypertension, prolonged headaches, obesity, anxiety and panic disorders, depression, heart attacks and in severe cases stress induced suicide. Staff are unable to cope with the duties of their family life because of this work-life imbalance. Many marriages have ended up in divorce due to stress caused by unhealthy work timings and practices.
The style of leadership changed when a new CEO took over beginning on December 2016. Policies were changed and staff were not given enough time to adapt to the new system. Confused and unhappy staff perform below their capabilities thus leading to complaints lodged by consumers and employers. The new CEO has high expectations and very ambitious. Which is a good thing. But medical staff are pushed to perform beyond their ability, without judging the environment and limitations at work. Constant pressure and lack of appreciation led to many staff resigning without any notice. This caused major disruption in the delivery of services. The remaining staff are expected to work extra hours without rest leading to more man made errors subjecting the patients to more harm than good.
