Case study topic 5 (Week 11): Organisational Culture (Robbins et al, 2017: Chapter 15) Please note that in addition to the prescribed textbook, groups are expected to draw on at least three peer-reviewed academic research articles published since 2010 to support their presentation analysis; presentations should not simply duplicate lecture slides. Ellen and Portia began a successful startup two years ago, which has experienced rapid expansion within the past two years. Their four offices are located in Melbourne, but they are looking to expand their company to other capital cities around Australia and New Zealand in the next six months. Ellen and Portia, as the company’s founders, have instilled dominant cultural values to staff within their Melbourne offices, and are keen to instil these same values in their new locations. They are aware of a similar successful startup that failed to expand effectively because the company’s founders focused more on the day-to-day business of expanding the company, neglecting to adequately shape the organisational culture within the new locations. Employees within the failed company reported low morale, lack of agreement about core values, and dysfunctional conflict over how business should be conducted. As a result, customer-service, sales, and innovation were well below projections in the failed company. In order to avoid a similar situation in their company, Ellen and Portia have commissioned your consultancy to assist in establishing a strong organisational culture in the new locations. Explain the characteristics of an organisational culture and the advantages and disadvantages of a strong organisational culture. Drawing on your knowledge of establishing organisational cultures, provide a set of recommendations Ellen and Portia can follow to ensure their cultural values are instilled in their new offices.
