CONSTRUCTION MANAGEMENT
300720 CONSTRUCTION TECHNOLOGY 1 (Civil).
MAJOR ASSIGNMENT Autumn 2017.
Introduction:
Residential construction in NSW and particularly Western Sydney is currently in an uptrend. This is thanks to the NSW’s Government and The Growth Centres Commission legislation to facilitate the increased density and new residential targets for growth – named the State Environmental Planning Policy (Sydney Region Growth Centres) 2006. Despite this policy providing the planning framework for increased residential densities, infrastructure, and zoning requirements, it has been the requirement of Local Councils to ensure that development is undertaken in accordance to their specific aims & objectives.
The particular project we are focusing on in this assignment is Oran Park town development under the direction of Landcom, which is at an elevation of 96.7m not far from Catherine Field. It is a major housing development which is Sydney fastest growing development. Oran Park wasone of the first Precincts releasedin the South West Growth Centre. (See web pages at the end).
Development in Oran Park commenced in December 2008. When fully developed, the Precinct will include:
• Around 18 hectares of employment land
• A 50,000 square metre town centre and two neighbourhood centres
• 36 kilometres of walking and cycling routes, and
• 148 hectares of open space
Oran Park Town has attracted keen homebuyers from all over Sydney. The first stages of land releases around the Oran Park Town Centre have experienced high demand, with the first residents moving into their new homes in 2011.
The Oran ParkDevelopment Control Plan2007 (DCP) has been amended in August 2014.The amendment updates development controls for the Oran Park Town Centre in Part B of the DCP. These controls help facilitate the development of the town centre and include a Public Domain Manual and Ecological Sustainable Development (ESD) controls for the town centre.Other minor amendments were also made to Part A of the DCP.
Eventually it will have 25,000 residents living a modern lifestyle, incorporating the latest in home design and sustainability. This developmenthas a Community Resource Hub which is a one-stop-shop for the community’s social, learning, leisure and healthcare needs. There is a shopping centre, restaurants and play centre. There is also schools, retirement village, churches and many other resources that makes the Oran Park Town Development totally self-contained.
The Task:
You will form groups within your surveying lab in Week 2;Tuesday and Wednesday, (28 02 17&01 03 17) of no more than 6 people. Thesegroupsyou form will be doing their presentation in week 13 or 14which is worth 10% for each individual member of that group. The final written report, whichis submitted as a group, which is worth a further 30%. Many resources will be placed on vUWS over the next few weeks, to assist you in your preparation. See the end of this document for some websites.
The purpose of this document is to outline this Major Assignment. The groups formed in week 2, will be your groups for theSurveying (practical 1 & 2) and soils lab (Lab1 and 2).You will be working on the Major Assignment in your own time.Specific consultation time is allowed for in week 10 (week commencing 24th April). Please refer to the Learning Guide and Unit Outline for more details.
You are encouraged to make a visit to this development at Oran Park and examine existing buildings and infrastructures, to assess any features that could be improved upon. There are many websites advertising the virtues of Oran Park. Look for any deficiencies, restrictions or other possible poor designs within this precinct, which your group thinks could be improved on. This then would be the basis of your assignment, i.e. determining a better solution to what you have observed.
Your Major Assignmentis to prepare a report detailing the requirements from a Civil perspective for theseimprovements to this developmentat Oran Park.
Should your group find this too vague, the following points numbered 1 through 8 below, are given for you to consider.
The major focus of this major assignment is on civil earthworks and the footings required for the proposed structure that your group has selected.
1. Most importantly in this major assignment, you are to focus onWork Health Safety (WHS) issues that could be encountered on thisproposed construction site.More details will be covered during the lecture..
2. Your group will further detail the specific machinery you envisage will be used to undertake the earthworks for your structure. You are not designing the structure, or the building proposed, rather you are an earthworks contractor, carrying out the major earthworks, that is required to build the proposed project. These machinescould range frommajor earthwork machinery through to hand held devices, required for detailed earthworks.
3. These first two areas (1) & (2) above, must be covered in your Major Report. These are the only mandatory areas to be included in your report.
4. Your groups Major Report, will detail in addition to the above two items, how the Civil earthworks could be carried out. You are to describe how the excavation could be done and determinean estimation of the earthworks quantities and possible costs involved. This is similar to what you have already done in Building 2, and will be doing in Estimating 1 next semester.
5. Also you will need to detail any temporary or permanent retaining wall structures, associated with the earthworks, required for this project.
6. You also need to consider a safety plan (Safe Work Method Statement (SWMS)) for a particular aspect of the project.
7. Also you also need to consider environmental issues such as Sediment Ponds and Erosion & Sediment controls. Also you need to anticipate possible local community environmental concerns. South Creek is in the vicinity of Oran Park, which is already polluted.
8. Basically you are considering a development at this precinct, as if you were the earthworks contractor, constructing it and all that that entails. Assume that Council approval has beengranted for your proposal. It is most important you do not contact the Local Council or Landcom directly. We will be giving you sufficient resources to complete this project without the need to contactLG Council or Landcom themselves.
Topics and Presentation:
• Your group will select a particular proposal applicable to this precinct. It will be fully researched and documented. It might be proposed or existing or totally imaginary (i.e. will never be built). For example, a major ‘T’ bus interchange, a pedestrian underpass or bridge over The Northern Road. The corner of The Northern Rd and Peter Brock Drive is an extremely busy intersection. It’s a six lane major road.
• You will be required to give a detailed list of machinery required, a works schedule (time line) to complete this civil works. What site establishment (i.e. Preliminaries) are required? In the site establishment consider such items as (a)providing an access road for machinery and supplies; (b) location of a material storage area, (c) personnel facilities (site sheds), all in accordance with WorkCover current guidelines. In other words, what are thelegislative requirements required to complete this civil works.
• You do not have to design the structures or buildings associated with the civil works but determine what is needed for a successful project. For example, determine what is needed for the site establishment and the amenities (Site Sheds) that are required to provide a safe working environment which conforms to all to WorkCover Guidelines.WorkCover’s website contains all the appropriate guidelines.
• You are to assume that the site is a Greenfield site (i.e. no development in the vicinity, not as it currently appears) so you will need to provide temporary road access, power and water. Also the appropriate environmental controls, e.g. sediment ponds.
As part of your Major assignment, you will need to familiarize yourself with any geotechnical and survey data. Such things as contour maps or topographic maps should be sourced from the Land and Property Information http://maps.six.nsw.gov.au (Accessed 14 02 17). You also need to consider what utilities (water, sewage, internet & power) might be required for you to undertake your project, remember this is a Greenfield site.
It is your responsibility to familiarized yourself with this development at Oran Park and the material that will be published on vUWS over the next few weeks.
Your group chooses the project you wish to undertake in this precinct. However, you must check with your Lecturer, Paul Geier as to the suitability of the chosen project for your Major Assignment.
We will be forming groups in the1stSurveying Practical, onTuesday 28th February or Wednesday 1st March. ByTuesday, 14thMarchyour group needs to submit your group’s member’s names, your leaders nameand that persons mobile no. Please include in your email to Paul Geier, your groups day and time slot, and the chosen area of analysis for this Major Assignment. This will then be confirmed by email, by Paul Geier.
The following list is a guide of possible projects (should you need prompting) that could be your Major Assignment. These are not the only projects you can consider, just a selection of ideas, to get you started, should you have drawn a blank after your visit to Oran Park.
Remember your proposed development with the names in your group, must be submitted by email by 14th March.
Here is the list of possible proposed activities for the development for your consideration at Oran Park.
1. A pedestrian underpass or bridge, with appropriate footings.
2. A two Lane, car tunnel at an appropriate location.
3. A sediment pond with a 6,000,000 L capacity.Examine the existing sediment ponds built.
4. A grassed amphitheatre with suitable stage area, approximately 25 m by 10 m, which is at least 3 m below ground level to accommodate the grassed amphitheatre surrounding it, seating say 600 people.
5. Excavation for an Olympic sized swimming pool, with eight lanes.
6. A ‘T’ way interchange, suitably sized for a population of 10,000 people.
7. A recreational area, with a concrete skateboard, a cycle way, and exercise areas, for community use.
8. Underground car parking area adjacent to the retirement village with the dimensions of approx. 55 m by 15 m by 4 m deep, suitable for parking 30 cars.
9. Excavation work for the water treatment plant, (grey water recycling), suitable for a population of 10,000 people.
Each group need to choose one of the development activities and cover the following content under the Major Assignment Report:
1 Introduction
2. WHS (Work, Health and Safety) Issues
3. Major earthwork machinery and hand held devices
4. Description of excavations and method of construction
5. Description of temporary or permanent retaining structures and services associated with the earthworks
6. Estimation of quantities and possible costs of earthwork and other calculations
7. Safe Work Method Statement (SWMS)
8. Environmental Issues such as Sediment Ponds and Erosion and Sediment controls
9. Conclusion
This is a Construction Technology (Civil) course, and your Major Assignment must reflect the technology (machinery and techniques) that are needed to construct these or similar items listed above.
Presentation: The Major Report is not to exceed 1500 words per group member andbe professionally presented, with a bibliography, including all references &web pages and date accessed. You must use the Standard Harvard Method of Referencing. All direct interviews with construction personnel and builders are also to be documented. Remember please do not approach Landcom personnel. Your report must include diagrams, plans and pictures of the proposed civil earthworks, including the machinery and equipment needed to accomplish this project.
Value: 10% (individual presentation) 30% (group written report) giving a total 40%.
Due date: see the Learning Guide for the major project report and presentation due dates.
Late submissions: Penalty 10% of maximum available marks per day.
