SBM4104 Major Assignment
Propose and Present an IT Infrastructure Solution for a Small
Educational Organization
Presentations
Date due:
Week 12
Week 10
Value: 30%
Rationale
Practical exercises assess students’ ability to apply theoretical learning to
practical, real world situations.
In this assessment students must form project groups of 3 to 4 students.
Each group must design & configure an IT infrastructure solution for a small
organisation. Groups will present their solution during tutorial sessions
commencing in week 10.
Practical group exercise and presentation
The presentation should:
Identify the organization needs for the IT infrastructure and identify key
features and functionality of the IT infrastructure.
Demonstrate building-block approach steps to the network design for the
organization.
Include a demonstration showing how the network are configured and
simulated to achieve organization need.
Identify and discuss any implementation or operational issues.
Presentations should last between 10 to 15 minutes with each group member
playing a designated role. A hard copy report of approximately 2500 must be
provided to support the presentation. The report should include reference to
the roles and contributions of each member of the group.
The report must satisfy the following specific criteria:2 | P a g e
1. Demonstrate ability to plan, locate information using the Internet,
organisations and publications and analyse this information.
2. Demonstrate knowledge of IT Infrastructure and design a network using
building-block approach.
3. Simulate and configure network devices as one step towards network
implementation and testing.
4. Demonstrate the ability to discuss IT Infrastructure models, propose a
Request For Proposal (RFP) document.
Case Study
Suppose you are recently hired as an IT infrastructure expert at an
Educational Organisation named Middle East College (MEC). The MEC is a
small size organisation with 5,000 students. It has two separate departments
(Business and Accounting). The business department building consists of two
levels with 2000 students, 20 staff members. The account department
building consists of three levels with 3000 students, 25 staff members. In
addition, there are another 100 staff member who work in various
administration, library, maintenance, student registration.
The MEC must provide an online learning system that allows students to
access teaching materials via the internet. In addition, the college needs to
use a website www.mec.edu.au for advertisement and provide general
information related to the college and programs. The staff member and
students must use college email for formal communication. Each department
needs to be supported with three computer labs each with 25 desktop
computers that allows the student to access internet and college learning
system. In addition, each department must provide wireless network that
allows students to use their laptops or mobile devices to access college
network.
Task Specifications
Prepare a report to propose a network design for the MEC. Use the buildingblock approach to design the network for the MEC. Your design should
consider the followings:3 | P a g e
1. Developing logical network design that includes the geographical scope
of the network and a categorization of current and future network needs
of the various network segments, users, and applications.
2. Develop a detail logical design based of hierarchical internetworking
model. The design should include the set of required servers with the
justification.
3. Specify the IP addresses, subnet masks to the various networks and
control the process by which IP addresses are assigned to individual
clients and servers.
4. Use network simulator (Cisco Packet Tracer) to simulate the access
layer for one department only.
5. Develop a Request For Proposal (RFP), specifying equipment,
software, and services are required.
You have to make some assumptions with the required justifications for your
design.4 | P a g e
