ENVS 7720 RESEARCH PROJECT DESIGN AND CONDUCT ASSIGNMENT 2: LITERATURE REVIEW Task: To write a review of literature that builds on assignment 1 – the problem statement; and which, in a revised form, can be included in assignment 4 – the research proposal. The literature review should be written in the form discussed already in this topic, the form that you see in review articles and in peer-reviewed journal articles. Your literature review should include: 1. An introduction to your topic that will explain very concisely what you plan to do and the knowledge gap(s) your research will tackle. You can use some elements of your problem statement here. (Target length about ½ page.) 2. The review of literature should be about eight pages in length and will: • identify literature relevant to the proposal (this could be conceptual, methodological, or both); • be selective – try and cover a range of relevant material rather than focus narrowly; • think critically, for example, by recognising knowledge gaps; • substantiate the claims made in the introduction. 3. List the literature cited in a correctly organized reference list. Make sure you list all the material you have cited in the review, in the reference list; ensure the references are complete, and ensure that you only use one reference system (Harvard) (see material on referencing at the beginning of the topic). Additional guidance on citation style and bibliographies can be found in: • Hay, I.M. (2012) Communication in Geography and the Environmental Sciences (see initial booklist) • Flinders Student Learning Centre – Referencing https://www.flinders.edu.au/current-students/slc/study-resources/referencing.cfm As a guideline, a minimum of 12-15 references should be used at this stage. Marking will be based on the three elements of the review listed above and your ability to write coherently. The maximum limit for this assignment is 2500 words, your assignment should be uploaded to FLO with 1½ or double line spacing and as a word file. 2500 words at this line spacing will be about nine pages. Marks will be deducted at the rate of 5% per ½ page (or part of a ½ page) over the maximum word limit. The reference list does not count toward these limits. The deadline is that stated in the SAM The assignment is worth 25 per cent of your overall mark.
