Leadership or Supervision
Introduction
Representing our school used to be fun and breathtaking due to the level of commitment that was being exhibited by both the administration of the games department as well as the various teams. All allowances were paid on time, and the players could receive the right incentives for their motivations. This lasted until the head of the department was changed as a way of accommodating the new administrative demands. Most of us expected to be an improvement to the previous regime, but unfortunately, it proved to be a turn for the worst. All departmental function was no longer in line with the previous objectives thus making most of the stakeholders to lose confidence in the senior administration. I felt like I should take over the reins of leadership and correct the mess in there.
Leadership Style
I would, first of all, apply that transformational leadership style that involves motivating team members-departmental heads-to work to perfection. Transformational leadership style is instrumental in bringing the necessary transformation to the already underperforming functions (Greenstein, 2009). To achieve this, I would pursue avenues that will motivate my juniors as a way of improving their commitment to task completion. Also, I will ensure that their welfare is well taken care of so that they can devote their talents towards the general improvement of the department. To achieve this, I will encourage team members to strive to outdo the premeditated goals so that together we can reach the overall organizational targets. This will be realized majorly through observable attitude change among team members as well as enhanced performance during interschool competitions.
I will also incorporate team leadership since it will be an instrumental dimension towards the over the success of any leadership approach. I will encourage members to trust each other while carrying out group responsibilities. This will result in a unique bond among the members thus propelling each other towards the overall achievement of preset goals. Using this model, I will clearly explain to the future direction of the department and the necessary activities that have to be undertaken to realize the set targets. In this manner, they will understand the nitty-gritty of the plan thus tailoring their efforts to meet the demands of their responsibilities.
Qualities of a Good Leader
Excellent leadership qualities are a prerequisite to the success of any function in an ambitious organization (Pringle, 2007). As a result, I will strive to acquire the necessary leadership attributes that will help me to bring the necessary change in the sports department. They are as discussed below.
Focus. This implies to the ability to emphasize the critical elements of a given function while attempting to have it done within the stipulated time (Iqbal, 2011). It also means only maintain the right track in the best way possible to realize the preset ambitions. I will primarily focus on motivating employees and ensuring that their welfare is well catered for. Also, I will set the target for them as a way of boosting their efficiency since they will be gauged against their returns in the process of pushing for change. This will motivate them to meet their goals. I will also try to maintain each employee’s focus as a way of ensuring that all operations are in sync with the organizational expectations.
Confidence. This is paramount for any leader since it enables them to articulate their policies without fear of compromise (Bonnici, 2011). Maintaining objectivity is the most important aspect of leadership endeavor. This entails setting achievable goals, overseeing subordinates as well as carrying out corrective measures in case there is any need to do so. As the departmental leader, I will strive to be confident while implementing change. I will be ruthless for those who aim to hijack progress while encouraging underachievers to do more to enhance their reputation and contribution. This will increase my effectiveness since it will stick with the initial plan regardless of all the challenges and intimidation that is hurled my way. I will strive to achieve my vision for the department while instilling confidence on my juniors to emulate my actions. This will trickle down that departmental structure thus bringing on board the necessary and desired changes.
Transparency. The majority of the problems that are pegging back the department are transparency since many office occupants do not make the cut. Consequently, the current performance is dismal since they do not possess that requisite skills to push forward the departmental agenda correctly. Also, it means that all activities will be carried out in an accountable manner to guarantee optimum performance. These include recruitment, promotion as well as remuneration.
Motivation. This means to inspire home amongst the team members that they are on the right track and that whatever they are after with materialize. Effective leaders are those who motivate their subordinated to follow their actions (Adeninyi, 2007). I will strive to achieve the highest level of motivation for my juniors so that we can be the same age in any activity that we do. By so doing I will marshal their abilities towards the overall course. This will improve the overall efficiency since they will be highly efficient.
Do I Possess Them?
Of course, I have always attempted to improve myself on every front with leadership skills being at the forefront. I am personally motivated to assume any office given a chance, I am inspirational, confident and also focused on quality delivery. Also the fact that am a member of one of the school teams I believe am in better position to bring the much-needed change since I know where the real mess is.
Conclusion
Effective leadership entails possessing the requisite skills and duly applying them where necessary (Adair, 2009). Also, good leaders motivate their staff to toe the organizational line while giving them the necessary motivation to do so. By so doing the employee will be motivated and committed o fulfilling organizational responsibilities since they feel valued by the organization as much as they are selling their talents. I believe that I possess all these that will enable me to realize the desired change in the school sports department.
