GROUP PROJECT:
Researching and Designing the market entry strategy for a New Zealand product targeted at a specific niche overseas market.
Due Date: Group Project Report & Presentation: May 29 in class starting sharp at 5.30pm.
Weight: 40% Marks: 100 marks
Learning Outcomes Covered: 4, 5 & 6.
This group project is the third and final assessment for the course. Projects are to be carried out by student groups of a maximum of four members. The group will share responsibility for the selection of a New Zealand product and its market entry strategy overseas. This will include selection of a niche target market overseas and justification via research, the mode of entry. You will also be required to research and investigate the nature and operation of global capital markets specifically in context to venture capital. The group will then present their product concept and findings to the rest of the class.
Assignment Requirements:
1. Your group has just received a consultancy contract worth $ 25,000 to research and investigate a market entry strategy for a chosen product. Alternatively, your group creates a new startup product, that leverages off the NZ country of origin brand. This requires your group to conceptually and design a niche “value added” product for a niche target market overseas.
2. Your group product should be “value added” in New Zealand that could appeal to a well-defined niche’ markets overseas. The group will discuss how you will leverage off the NZ “Country of Origin” in terms of brand positioning, in relation to your competition in the targeted overseas market.
This assignment is demanding and will require a significant amount of research. It is suggested that you put most of the material analysed in an appendix and provide a summary in the main report. It is good to tabulate as much information as possible in a meaningful and easy to read formats. For this purpose, you need to conduct a significant amount of research and you are required to append a list of websites visited to your report.
Instructions:
1. Attendance will be taken in each class session since continuous project evaluation and feedback to other members and the lecturer will take place in class.
2. Presentations will be a maximum of 10 minutes in length. Five minutes will follow each presentation during which the group will field questions from the class concerning the project. All group members must participate in the presentation.
3. No postponements of the presentation will be allowed.
Fairness
Under normal circumstances group members will receive equal marks. If, however, one or more group members fail to take an equal share of the work, the peer group evaluation form (which is attached) will determine the individual grades for the project.
Plagiarism - Failure to acknowledge the use of another’s piece of work is considered plagiarism and it could lead to a loss of all marks allocated for the assignment. Most commonly, plagiarism exists when parts of the work or the whole of the work are taken from another source without reference to the original author. Follow APA style of referencing.
Assignment Requirements
• Your paper should be presented in a business report format. Use 12 point Times New Roman font in your answer script. Spacing should be 1.5. You must attach the cover page signed by all members, and place the report in a plastic folder.
• The main body of the report should be limited to approximately 3000 words and all research reports, tables, data etc should be placed in an appendix.
• Your report MUST follow the APA style of both in text referencing and on the reference page at end of your report.
Discussion Questions:
1. a. The “new” product concept clearly articulated by differentiating with New Zealand country of origin brand attributes. (10 marks)
b. Discuss critically how your product concept provides a “bundle of benefits” to your targeted niche’ market. (5 marks)
c. Analysis your key competition in the target market and present their brief profiles. (5 marks)
2. Assume that to operationalise and launch your product concept, you will seek funds from venture capitalists/angel investors.
a. Investigate the nature and structure of the global capital market for start-up/venture capital. (10 marks).
b. Research and discuss in depth, its current availability in New Zealand. (10 marks)
3. a. Apply PEST analysis to the overseas country your target market is located, and use the template provided. (10 marks)
b. Discuss the “Persons” of your niche targeted buyers. (10 marks)
Note: you need to be accurate with the figures and acknowledge the sources of information.
4. a. Briefly discuss and justify, two appropriate market entry strategies to reach your niche export market. (10 marks)
b. Analyse and selection one of the above strategy and provide justification in terms of your status as a SME. (Note, do use your PEST analysis above as a resource to discuss your entry mode). (10 marks)
5. Class Presentation of the report as per attached criteria. (20 marks)
