MAN6301 Project Risk Management V
Project Report – 1/2017
Core Reference: “Risk Management in Major Sporting Events: A Participating National Olympic Team’s Perspective” (Hanstad, 2012)
You are required to develop a report about project risk management as specified below. It should be constructed using the material contained in the paper with the above title published by Dag VidarHanstad in 2012 and any other information that you think is relevant. The case study above provides a discussion on how Norway’s national team prepared for the 2010 Olympic Games in Vancouver. In other words, it examines risk management from the participant’s perspectives and not that of the host.
For this project, you are the risk consultant / risk manager for a national football (soccer) team of your choice. You decide your country (any country) and assume that you have qualified for the 2018 World Football Cup.
You are required to produce a report for a National World Cup 2018 Football Cup Management Committee entitled:
“Risk Assessment of the 2018 Football World Cup for the National Football Team”.
The project is sending the national soccer team to participate in the 2018 World Football Cup, held from 14th June to 15th August 2018 in Russia (http://www.fifa.com/worldcup/ ). It is important that both negative as well as positive risk events/conditions be identified and evaluated well in advance of the actual event, so that preparation on risk management can begin.
The assignment should be completed in two parts:
Part 2: Business Report (worth 50%)
Part 2 requires you to take the risks you have identified in Part 1, analyse them in a qualitative approach and produce a formal report in the format as shown below.
It should cover the following topics:
• Aim and Success Criteria for project
• Risk Appetite and Tolerance
• Risk Breakdown Structure
• Risk Probabilities
• Risk Consequences
• Risk Severity Matrix
• Risk Responses Strategy
• Risk Register
You should use the data collected in part 1 and be guided by the material provided in the unit (overheads, readings, textbook, etc.) and other readings in developing the report. When put together the whole report should reflect a professional standard and the written parts should be 3,500 words long (not including appendices). Words after 3,500 will NOT BE MARKED.
The report is addressed to someone in a position of authority, i.e. the report is written in a formal manner setting out details as outlined in the report requirements.
Report Layout
This is a management report which will be assessed according to its usefulness to the organisation. The analysis needs to reflect the application of theory to practice. The business report should have the following content/headings:
• Cover: title of report, to whom it is addressed, who has written it, date.
• Background information: a brief overview of the project’s aim, deliverables, success criteria (half a page).
• Executive summary: this summarise the total project. It is neither background information nor an introduction. By reading this summary, the executive is given an overview of the how the analysis was done (approach), what was covered (scope), and what were the main findings and recommendations. This section should be about one page long.
• Recommendations: there should be 2-3 primary recommendations and a number of secondary recommendations for each primary one. Recommendations are derived from the analysis that was completed. They may cover how to organise your risk management as well as be efficient in how resources are applied.

• Stating the point at which the risk may occur
• Describing the risk succinctly
• Classifying the risk using appropriate risk breakdown categories
• Assessing the risk
• Justifying its inclusion through research, published cases, news reports etc

It is mandatory that you provide an audit trail of your data collection activities: sources of data (e.g. Internet URL, brochures), dates when the data was obtained (e.g. dates Internet was accessed). Also consider the risk tolerance of the organisation towards the risk.
