Should TOD focus on enhance and improve walkability quality (slow mode) or private motorized travel (fast mode)?
Abstract
Over the years, humans exponentiallyrely on faster modes of transport and gradually forgetthe need for aheathy lifestyle.
This thesis explores these two urban designs, (i) walkability (pedestrian, cycle facilities and public transport aspect) and(ii) private motorized path. Through research of Transit-oriented development (TOD), most of the sources hint at prioritising high quality support and enhancing urban communities by designing land use, building form, and planning(“TOD Guide” 2017). It’s not only the use of transit; the most basic and important key is walkability (Alexander 2014pg 18). The aim of this thesis isthat walkability potentially offers communities liveability and improved community’s health fitness. In light of this, there are two potential strategies that can contributedto community designs, (i)enhance walkability and (ii) improve the quality of pedestrian walkways. The main basic key factors of these strategies are shown in Table 1. (“TOD Guide” 2017).
Strategies How
Connections Ease of access to street crossings and public transports?
Safety Pedestrian &Street detail narrow?
Vehicle speed make pedestrian comfort? (>40km/h)
Scale & High Accessibility The publics’ perception of the distance to their destination.
Non-motorized Ease of access to walkways/cycles paths?
Nice ambient environment/layout to encourage them?
Programming Anyactivities, public open spaces that can bring communities together?
Through observations during theLeederville site visit, there are manystrong strategiesof walkability element appear. They have Centre traffic closingson weekends forpublic activities, qualitycycle facilities, captivating sights on pedestrian walkways,,good access distanttoJoondalupand Fremantle train lines, and many walkability modes. The slow mode outcome led to the safe, comfortable and convenient routes pedestrian and cyclist. Hence, building a healthy community and environment as a part of good urban design TOD aim for("Leederville Activity Centre Plan" 2011).
On the contrary, observations of Mirrabooka inStirling, their urban design was more focused on fast mode private transportations. The situation of the suburb facing uncertain spaces leads to an unsafe environment, RegionalCentre entrances lack of welcoming, ,landscapes are isolated, and lack of centre activities (Mirrabooka Enquiry-By-Design Workshop 2000). The outcome of thesereduces its walkability conditions and will result in an increase in traffic congestions, accident risks, and overall, less public willing use of walkability.
Although these two arguments on slow modes or fast modesare very competitive. From these two case studies, itis clear onhow important it is to enhance and improve the walkability environment (pedestrian, cycle and public transport) for communities.
Overall, humans need to understand that in reality, slow modes of transport will never be able to replace fast modes of transport due to the countless benefits to one’s communities liveability and community’s health fitness.
Objective
Primary:
Argument between should a suburb/city focus on slow lifestyle(walkability) or fast mode. Exploring walkability element, analyse the case study walkability outcome that walkability is more important.
Secondary:
To identify the case study Leederville through site visit and research. Using TOD in walkability strategies that can encourage communities to use walkability, resulting in a healthy suburb.
To identify the case study Mirrabooka, and having opposite ways of strategies focusing on private transport quality, resulting lack of walkability strategies that results in a unhealthy suburb.
