Written Component - 2 Reports
Report 1 – A critical reflection based on the experiential learning undertaken in this subject. This will take the form of a journal documenting the student’s Industry Practicum experience. This will contribute to 30% of the final marks for this subject.
Word count – minimum 1,500 words
Due – Throughout the practicum experience – your teacher will ask you to present your journal to discuss work in progress throughout the semester.
Report 2 – A final report on the overall Industry Practicum experience. This will contribute to 10% of the final marks for this subject.
Word count – minimum800 words
Due – End of semester
Industry Practicum experience
Identification, application and completion of the practical aspects of the Industry Practicum. This will contribute to 50% of the final marks for this subject. This is also a hurdle requirement (i.e. must be passed).
Approximately 80 hours.
Due – Throughout the semester.
Assessment Requirements:
This subject will provide the student with knowledge and skills necessary to apply for and gain an Industry Practicum within their chosen field.
The student will, through a journal and report, reflect on their experiences during the practicum and thus provide a vocational context to their profession. This subject will also provide the student with an opportunity to gain a broad insight into how the knowledge and skills gained through lectures and tutorials may be applied in a professional context.
The Industry Practicum will need to be approved by NMIT and meet the educational requirements of the course.
The student will be provided with the necessary information and support to apply for an Industry Practicum and eventually apply for a position within their selected field.
Experiential learning will include the application of technical tasks related to their studies together with relevant employability skills required in a business or work environment.
Arrangements for the practicum will include:
• negotiation with the student to establish suitability, agreement and scheduling of the Industry Practicum
• a site visit and interview by NMIT with the Industry Practicum supervisor to ascertain suitability of the Industry Practicum prior to commencement
• an Industry Practicum agreement signed by the Industry Practicum supervisor the student and NMIT, prior to the placement, outlining the responsibilities, roles and duties and other such conditions pertaining to the practicum.
Report 1 and Placement
Completion of a journal that provides a regular account of the student’s industry practicum experience. This will include reporting on meetings, seminars, work placements, industry body involvement, voluntary work related to the industry, interviews with industry practitioners, research on the industry and profession and any other such activity that constitutes the student’s industry practicum experience. The journal must reflect at least 80 hours of activities.
Report 2 and Placement
Completion of a report summarising the industry practicum experience. This should take on the format of a more formal and academic report rather than the journal required for Report 1.
Submission requirements
1) Students are to submit individual assignments.
2) All assignments must be submitted as a hardcopy with an assignment cover sheet attached. The assignment cover sheets are available on the Student Portal, or from the Course Administrators. Assignments and the cover sheets must be submitted personally to the Course Administrator in PE331. Upon submission you will be issued with a receipt.

An Industry Practicum experience may include any of the following:
• Industry placement with a host organisation (all relevant paperwork must be filled in and submitted prior to the placement)
• Part time or casual employment in a position related to the student’s study area (e.g. part time book keeper etc)
• Attendance to industry or professional body seminars or professional development events
• Membership of a relevant professional body
• Interviews with industry practitioners discussing the profession and career options
• Attendance to industry / business breakfasts, lunch meetings or other such activities
• Voluntary or community work in an area related to the student’s field of study
• Evidence of research activities based on the developing the student’s knowledge of the industry or profession
Reflection may cause the student to consider and comment on future career options; industry or professional direction; ethical issues; relationship, linkages or differences between the theoretical and practical aspects of the student’s studies; issues pertaining to the industry or profession that may provide an insight or be of concern to the student; development of employability skills and graduate attributes and their relevance to the profession or industry; and opportunities and risks related to the student’s desire to work within the industry or profession.
