Summary
Assignment objective
Workinginyoursyndicategroups,youwill investigate a ProjectManagement scenario, usinginformation giventodevelopawrittenreport and presentationtoanswer questions about thescenario. The Report is to be 1,500 to 2,000 words, plus a reflection (max 200 words). ThePresentationshouldbea maximum of15slides, and the Presentation should not run for morethan 15minutes, including questions and answers (allocate 2/3 minutes by member).
Value
The assignmentconstitutes 20%ofthetotalcourse mark, andisgroupassessed.The markcomprises15%for the Report and5%for the Presentation.
Due Dates and Submission
Submission of theReportisdueby midnightSunday 11June 2017(end of Week11) to VU Collaborate. ThePresentationwill take place in thelecture of Week 10(Tuesday30May 2017). The Presentation slide show should be brought tothe lecture on aflash drive or uploaded in advance to VU Collaborate (you can update you slides up to end of Week10).

Scenario
You are working for ProCon Services Australia,aProject Management consultancy.Yourcompany has been engaged by Vella Office Fitouts, whoarecurrently undertaking the fitoutofa medium-rise officebuildingina Melbourne suburb. A team ofcompany staff andcontractors,ledbyaProjectManager,havebeen performing the work. The fitout is part-completed, andtheProjectManager,TonyFaultier,hasjustleft the company abruptly,movingoverseastotakeupapositioninanother company.
You have been put in charge of working with Vella OfficeFitouts to investigate the currentstatusoftheprojectand determine any corrective action required, includingprovidingadviceonreplacingtheproject manager, and improving the performance of theproject team. You aretoreportyourfindingstotheboardofVellaOfficeFitouts,including Jim Vella, thebusinessowner and chairman.
The buildingcomprises four levels, and is designed to house 200 people,with 50 on eachfloor.Each floor provides 500 m2of office space.Vella Office Fitouts are in charge of theentire fitout, including furnishings, plumbing, electrical and dataandtelecominfrastructure.200 staff of Ferrari Software, acomputersoftware company, aretoberelocatedintothebuildingattheendofthefitout.
Informationgathering
As you begin your investigation, you find that Tony Faultier has left verylittleinthe way ofreliablerecordsoftheproject. As you interview other staff andstakeholders,youareabletobuildupthefollowingpicture:
The Project
• Thetotalfitoutbudgetis$1.2M.
• Theoriginalschedule was for completion ina total of four months,commencing on 1March,and completing on30June.Itisnow1May.Atthispoint,theschedulestatesthatworkonthegroundfloorshouldbe completed, the first floor 50% completed andthe second floor 50% completed. Work on thetopfloorisnotyetduetocommence.
• On investigation, it is found thattheworkonthegroundfloor is only 75% complete, thefirstflooris25% complete and the second floor is 25% complete. Also,thetopflooris50% complete, aheadofschedule.
• So far, $675K has been spent on the fitout.
The People
• You are told that Tony Faultier was seenas a belligerent, even bullying, projectmanager; but the teamalso saw himas being somewhat lazyinhisownwork,whilebeing impatient and intolerant of others.
• Tony’sstylewasquiteautocratic, and he wasunwillingto listen to advice frommembers of the team.
• Vella Office Fitouts have a strict policy of performance-based salaryforallstaff,wherebonusesarepaidfor performing beyondworktargets.
• Some of the teammembers were awarethat work should not have commenced on thetopfloor,and attempted totellTonythatthis was causing problems, with one case ofaccidental leakagefromthe plumbing causing damage to the first-floor fitout, delayingwork; however, Tony advised themto continuewiththework.Itwasfoundthathe wasbeingpaida commission byaformer senior manager atVellafor completing theBoardRoomon the top floor early for a personal celebration.
• A number of the Vella Office Fitouts staffcomplained thatsomeof the contract staffdid not seem to have received adequate training on the specialiseddata cabling requiredfor this fitout,leading to costlyrework in the cableterminations.
YourPresentationandReport
You and your teamare to produce a full report,which you will present to the Boardof Vella Office Fitouts. Your report shouldincludethefollowingdetails:
• A brief summary of the current status ofthe project, including the Cost Variance andtheScheduleVariance.Thisshouldalso include an overview scorecard or chart of theproject,comparingthe scheduled tasks tothe actual.
• A list ofanyadditional information the new Project Manager will need tosource inorder to produce regular, detailedstatus reports on the project.
• An overview of the leadership behaviour ontheproject.ThisshouldusetheOrganizationalZoo model torepresentTonyFaultier’s observed behaviour, and shouldalso make recommendationsforthepreferred leadership behaviour to be targeted in therecruitment ofanewProjectManager,includingsupport andjustification.
• An overview of the existing teamenvironment, with recommendations forchangestoworkprocessesandpoliciestoestablisha more cooperative environment, whereteammembers willfeelmore abletoshare their knowledgeofprojectrisksor problems,andcontributeto improvements inprojectperformance. Thisshouldalsobesupportedwithsome analysis.
Report
Thewrittenreportshouldbe1,500to2,000words, andincluderelevant diagrams, chartsandimages. Youalsoneedtoplanyourstudent group’swork on the overallassignment (reportandpresentation)andincludethisplanasanappendix to your report. Youshouldalsoinclude abriefreflectionasanappendix (maximum 200words),commentingonthe performance ofthe student group in completing the assignment. The report should include the followingitems:

Thisshouldnotexceed eight slides.Yourgroupwill have15 minutesto present your report, including time forquestionsandanswers.Eachmember of your group should take part inthepresentation.
