The Proposal
A 3,000 words Proposal for Digital Project (weighting 25%).
This part of the assessment must be individual work.
The Proposal template
Please follow the headings below when writing the Proposal.
1. Student/Group:
ID (please indicate ID number) and Name of students
2. Provisional Project Title
Please indicate a provisional title for your project, this can be changed/re-phrased at a later stage. The title should be relatively short and poignant. It should indicate the nature of the problem but it should captivate the audience imagination. You can include a longer, more explanatory subtitle to help the audience understand better the nature of the proposed Project.
3. Outline of Project, Deliverables and platform:
Provide a brief description of the proposed Project. Clearly specify the key features of your project and the platform (web, DVD/Video, 3D project, animation, game, mobile app etc.) your will use to deliver the project.
4. Topic/ area of research and Aims of Project
Please outline the design/production topic you want to investigate and the core ideas/area of study and research behind your chosen topic. Your project should address a problem/issue in digital media design and production, it should be rooted in a clear area of design/production research and your work should contribute to the research-led production of your project. Therefore you will have to clearly identify an area of applied research that is related to your Project.
You should also specify the intended audience for your project. You should indicate age group, cultural background (when relevant), income (when relevant), gender, geographical location, etc.
Clearly specify the aims of your project, possibly in bullet point format. You should also provide a clear account of the rationale for your project idea. You should be able to demonstrate that your project is designed to meet the aims that you have defined and that there is a coherent overall thinking behind your project idea.
Some examples:
Topic Area of research:
1.A game for adult training:
• e-learning
• game design for learning
2. A web site for a virtual community:
• Virtual community design and management
• Usability design
• Human-computer interaction
3. A mobile application for ecommerce:
• E-commerce and e-solutions
• Usability design
• Design for mobile applications
4. An interactive love story:
• Non-linear narratives
• Interactive story-telling
• Digital video/animation
5. Literature review and product research (this paragraph must be at least 1,000/1,500 words)
Literature review:
You should produce a review of available literature on your chosen topic. Indicate which publications (paper-based or electronic) will inform your production/research and compare and contrast views on your topic.
Product review:
A Product Review is the analysis of similar digital projects (commercial or academic/research projects) that in some way relate to your project idea, either because they use similar technologies or because they are exploring similar audiences, markets or design issues in your chosen field. Include a brief product review that will demonstrate awareness of previous productions in your chosen field. This should be an outline of 2/3 similar projects that have been published or made available to the public. You will have to list the project and produce a short paragraph explaining why these productions are relevant to your project and in which way your project is different.
6. Technologies employed and required resources:
Clearly specify your technologies of choice including:
production platform (hardware and software used to produce the project)
distribution platform (web, DVD/Video, 3D project, animation, game, mobile app, conceptual documents, etc.)
media equipment required (cameras, scanners, lights etc.) Outline and assess the resources needed for the project including hardware and software requirements; production team skills; research and evaluation tools and resources; time. Do not simply list the software and hardware requirement, you should provide a rationale for your choices of technologies.
Demonstrate awareness of Media Equipment Loan Policies and Procedures (https://intranet.londonmet.ac.uk/iss/s/media_home.cfm) if you need to borrow media equipment.
Review your current skills and indicate that you understand when and if you will need to acquire further skills and how you plan to do this (attendance to Autumn/Spring Semester modules, selfdirected study to further develop your understand of software capabilities, request for tutorials etc.). Consider time, it is one of your more important resources!
7. Project plan - timeline:
Outline the indicative time frame for research, production and evaluation. Define the time-length of the project production and associate tasks to each month/week from the time you expect feedback from the proposal submission to the time you have to submit the final Project. You can include (as Annex or Appendix) a spreadsheet or other type of chart to help visualise the time schedule. Be realistic and consider also your other commitments. Demonstrate that you are aware of the different phases of production/evaluation.
8. If group work, outline of group members contribution
If you are producing a group project you should outline each group members expertise, interests and specific tasks/contribution to the project
9.Methodology for evaluation
Provide an indicative plan for the evaluation of the Project (you will not have to actually carry out the evaluation but rather outline your plans for a future evaluation).Provide a brief outline of the methodology you would use to carry out an evaluation of your project, demonstrating understanding of the appropriate methods and tools in user testing and applied research. You should include a profile of your chosen sample (for example postgraduate students, age group, IT skills, background etc.) and provide a rationale for you choice of sample (example: postgraduate students match the profile of my intended target audience). You should also identify the choice of methods (questionnaires, interviews, observations).
10. Bibliography
YOU MUST INCLUDE A BIBLIOGRAPHY -You should support your arguments with references to relevant reading.
