Bus105 computing assignment
Trimester 1 2017
1 Overview
Warnings
*You will need to use excel to analyse the dataset, you must prove you are able to reproduce the excel analysis in the tutorial.
*It will not be enough to paste the reference list at the end of the assignment, you will also have to paste the exact reference you paraphrased.
You will download and analyse the Investor dataof the XYZ Investment advisors, Assume this is an international company that makes investments on behalf of its customers.
After paraphrasing some relevant literatureor webpage, you can choose any topic related to investors or investing there is only restriction on restriction on the topic. Since you have to give a suitable analysis on the investor data related to you topic your topic has to related to at least two of the variables the investor data set. Your analysis should include a suitable hypothesis test to investigate the relationship between 2 relevant variables.
Also
*find a 90% interval for the return on investment (measured in annual profit per $1000)
*test the claim the annual profit per $1000 is above $30
2 Materials
*The following word document has the correct layout for the assignment, you must download the document and then fill in all the relevant sections
assignment template
*You must use the dataset given below
Investor data
*You must use excel to get appropriate summary statistics and graphs, You can use a webpage or any package to find p-values.
*you must find at least one article on investors yourself.
3 Report Structure
The suggested report structure is as follows:
Section 1: Introduction
Give an introduction to the entire report
Section 2:Reviewing academic source(s) or website(s) relevant to investors
Find at least one journal article or website related to investors and give a brief discussion of the article
Section 3:A simple Bivariate analysis of the investor data and Hypothesis test
Using the
Investor data
*Include at least ONE bivariate analysis that shows the relationship between two variables you discussed inSection 2. You will need to explain if the Bivariate analysis does or does not support the claim made in section 2.
You will need to use excel to do this, you must also use a filter to select a sample based on your student number, if you are not sure how to do this refer to the following guide
*You will also need to perform at least ONE hypothesis test related to a bivariate analysis
Make sure you comment on your analysis and do NOT leave out the sample size. Note that you only have to do ONE bivariate analysis based on a pair of variables and there are 3 possible options
Option 1: You have picked two categorical variables
Use excel to give a two-way table, also give a chart that compares the proportions of the different groups.
Perform the chi square test of independence, you can use a webpage to find pvalue
Option 2: You have picked one categorical and one numerical variable
Use excel to give a table that compares the means and standard deviations of each group. Also, give a chart that shows the distribution of each variable.
Perform the two sample t test, If there are more than 2 categories just use the two most common categories. You can use a webpage to find p-value
Option 3: You have picked two numerical variables
Give a scatterplot that shows the relationship between both variables. Also, find the mean and standard deviation for each of the variables.
For the Hypothesis Test that the slope is different to 0 (or test if the correlation is 0, that will give EXACTLY the same p-value), If you are not sure how to do this you are allowed to replace one or both of your variables with a categorical variable and then do a suitable hypothesis test, you can use a computer to find p-value
Section 4:Investigate the variable return per $1000
You need to
*Find a 95% confidence interval for annual return on investment per $1000 .
*Test the claim the average annual return on investment per $1000 is above $30,
Section 5:Prepare basic advice for people for new employees at the XYZ company based on the previous findings, if this is too difficult give a general discussion about the issues with using samples.
Section 6:Give a conclusion of the previous sections. Propose some new researchbased on the previous discussion.
Section 7:
Reference list
Appendix
Cut and paste all references used and put them in the Appendix at the very end of the assignment
4 Report Format
Choose one of the following formats:
Times New Roman, 12pt
Calibri, 11pt
Arial, 10pt
5 Submission
Submit your word fileinto Turnitin
.
You must use the PivotTable feature of Microsoft Excel to find numbers and graphs that show the relationship between 2 variables. If it is not really clear you have used excel you will get an email asking for an Excel file with a pivot table
. There is no hard copy submission
6 Marking Scheme
look at the marking rubric in the course description
7 Due date
26th of May 11:55pm
8 Word limit
1500 words + or - 10%
9 Referencing
Use Harvard referencing, also paste in the parts of the references you used at the very end of the assignment.
