Asessment2 Decision Making. Word Count 1800 words Decisions that have an ethical element attached can be a minefield in the corporate world. There is a great deal of evidence that many organisations both large and small are engaging in CSR practice. This suggests that corporations are, or at least want to be seen as good corporate citizens. Cruise the web sites of most publicly listed companies and you will easily find their Value statements, or codes of ethics, many even write such things into their mission and value statements. With all of these self- regulated value systems many organisations still make unethical decisions. How can organisations limit these types of decisions that their values suggest they would never do? In their article: “Ethical Breakdowns” Bazerman and Tenbrunsel (HBR April 2011 issue) created a model of 5 Barriers to more ethical decision making. You are to apply this model to an ethical decision scenario that may come up in the Hospitality and Tourism Industry. Compare this to a more traditional model of ethical decision making, do you think it is more helpful? Why? Areas of interest could be: Supplier Relationships, H.R, Property developers and owner relationships, etc. Why is it useful to understand the idea of unintended consequences and complex adaptive systems when making large broad decisions? Explain two points that might assist someone in making these decisions. It is essential that you let the appropriate literature drive your arguments.
