Assignment 3 (Group) – Research & Presentation Activity: The implementation of a key infrastructure or software component of an organisation – did it match the business case?
Due Date: Week 11 (by midnight AEST, Sunday, May 21, 2017) Required Length: 2500 words Marks Allocated: 40% (30% for the Report and 10% for the Presentation) Submission Procedure: Please submit a copy through the link provided on Blackboard.
Details Research Report – The deliverable – Create a 2500 word paper using the organisation that one of your group works for: a) to review the business case/justification/proposal for the implementation of a key infrastructure or software component, b) review if component was implemented to the specifications of the business case, and c) how did the implementation fit with the expectations/standards of the IT organisation. – The report should be written for the executive steering group, who originally approved the implementation of a key infrastructure or software component, and now want an independent view of how successful it has been. – Research Report – The task – Groups are to choose the implementation of a key infrastructure or software component of an organisation that one of the group works for (and an implementation which they can access significant information about), then write up the report with reference to: – How the implementation fits with the organisation’s IT architecture – How the implementation fits with the organisation’s legacy infrastructure – The involvement of vendors/partners/contractors – how well was this managed – What issues emerged during implementation that impacted on the original scope, timeline & budget – Review the Service Level Agreement that has been established for the software/hardware component and assess whether it meets the real requirements of the business. – Research Report – The assessment – Understanding of concepts • Clearly demonstrate your understanding of how to assess a business case and the key elements of it, as covered in class and included in the literature.
• • • • • • – Depth of research • A successful essay must go beyond restating the material presented in class, and must demonstrate a breadth and depth of research into the subject area. – Quality of analysis • You must demonstrate your ability to critically select, analyse and evaluate the key elements of the business case as it relates to ‘The task’ above and apply them the implementation by the chosen organisation that you are investigating, and make appropriate assessments. – Clarity • The essay should be well structured and clearly presented. – Effectiveness of argument • You must demonstrate your ability to take a position on the effectiveness of the implementation of the key infrastructure or software component by the organisation and effectively argue the position utilising case studies and references.

Guidelines for your Report Layout
Your report should be presented in a structured format with adequate cited evidence from literature sources (journal articles, refereed conference proceedings and academic books). The evaluation criteria for this assignment are as follows:
1. Presentation and Report format (20%) Your report should be structured with an executive summary, introduction, body and conclusion. You will receive marks for the layout, clarity of presentation and logical structure.
2. Evidence and arguments (70%) This section should include a clear statement of issues, and your discussion should use evidence from literature to support your views. You will receive marks for the flow of logical arguments, and validity of recommendations and conclusions you make.
3. Reference and citation (10%) Your selection of references, correct bibliographic format and adequate citation of references are important for this portion of the marks. You must specify any references that you have used using the recommended Swinburne referencing system which can be found at the following site:

Details Presentation – The deliverable Due Date: Week 12 (Week 12 class, Monday, May 22, 2017) Recommended Length: 8-10 PowerPoint slides Marks Allocated: 10% of overall subject mark for the Presentation Submission Procedure: Submission in advance is NOT required. Please submit an email copy to the Lecturer after it has been presented on Monday 22nd May.
Presentation – The deliverable Group members will present their reports to the executive steering group (represented by the class) and demonstrate their knowledge of the report content. Presentations will be 15 mins followed by 5 mins for the group to respond to questions.

Presentations will be judged on the following criteria: Clarity of objectives, assumptions and foundations Structure and logical flow of argument presented Use of relevant course concepts, evidence and examples Selection of key issues to cover in the presentation Originality in presentation and communication, and effective utilisation of all group members in the delivery.
