Task description Drawing on relevant items from the required weekly reading program for this unit and further research, you will undertake an analysis of a current topical health care issue in Australia following the detailed steps below. You must examine the issue with reference to the principles of person- centered care, cultural safety, professional standards & regulatory requirements. The assignment includes an analysis of the impact of socio-political issues on health and on consumers’ experience of health services by considering the impact of dominant values, assumptions & processes shaping health care in Australia. Write an introduction for your essay (300 words +/- 10%) Based on your reading and research write an introduction overviewing the health issue you have chosen. Write a body for your essay The body of your essay should address the following four questions: Question A: (400 words +/- 10%). It is well known that poverty is an important social determinant of health. Undertake research on the relationship between poverty and health. Citing several sources describe & discuss how poverty impacts on the health issue you have chosen. Question B: (400 words +/- 10%) Consider the health issue from the perspective of someone experiencing it focusing on the social determinants [i.e. the historical, social and political aspects] impacting on their health. For example: o for mental health, you could draw on Mental Health Poems o for obesity you could consider the Spackman family in Queensland o you could listen to Robert Gupta who uses music to discuss health & being socially marginalized o you could consider The Wilson's story of living with dementia; o you could draw on a memoir such as Anne Deveson's account of her son’s schizophrenia & the struggle to get help] o A fuller list of potential resources is provided below. Using one of these or another resource you find yourself [see resources section below for more ideas], write a description of the consumer’s/family’s experience of the health issue & their health care. Then write an analysis of how their experience fits and/or does not fit with the principles of culturally safe and person- centred care. Question C: (300 words +/- 10%) Undertake research on Health Services and the Australian Health Care System [note specific models of care delivery e.g. health promotion & disease prevention; primary care & community services; secondary & tertiary services; long-term & continuing care) available for people with the issue you have chosen.
