Structural Model Project (Project Report Submission Deadline: COB Friday, 26 May 2017) Identify a real-world truss structure and apply the force method to analyze its reactions and internal forces. Make appropriate assumptions when necessary. You can do the project either individually or in a group (up to five (5) students per group). The project report should include the following sections in the sequence specified below: • Synopsis Provide a brief summary of the project report. • Project context Describe the selected real-world structure and specify the part of the structure to which the force method is to be applied. • Assumptions and parameters Clearly state and justify the assumptions and parameters used for the structural analysis, such as the dimensions of the structural member(s), the applied loads, the support conditions (simply-supported, cantilever, etc.), and the material properties involved. • Procedures and calculations Determine the relevant reactions and internal forces and present the detailed procedures and calculations. • Plan for structural strengthening Propose a plan to strengthen the structure being analyzed. Justify your plan by detailed calculations. • References List the references used in the project. Marking criteria: • Communications (20%): Spelling, grammar, and presentation style. • Technical contents (80%): Synopsis (5%); project context (5%); assumptions and parameters (25%); procedures and calculations (20%); plan for structural strengthening (20%); references (5%).
