You are required to produce an annotated bibliography and presentation on the Application of
Algorithms in the real-world: Algorithms in the Wild
You should discuss the use and application of algorithms in any single domain of your choice, for
instance, art, science, government, or a specific industry. For example, a domain might be:
? Algorithms in music understanding and composition
? Algorithms in air traffic control
? Algorithms in geochemistry
Describe a number of key algorithms that are used in this domain (possibly algorithms that we have
discussed in lectures: String Processing, Graphs, Threading), with details about how the algorithms
work, and how they are applied in practice. Discuss some of the most interesting areas of ongoing
research in applying algorithms to this domain.
You need to prepare and present a presentation that is accessible to your fellow students. The
presentation is limited to only 6 slides and 7 minutes maximum.
The presentation will be on the last Tuesday of semester during the Workshop, i.e. Week 13, 9-
11am, Tuesday 6
the of June
The annotated bibliography should provide the background detail that you have researched for your
presentation. You should include and summarize all the sources of information that you have used
to create your presentation and include a reference list.
The annotated bibliography and your slides are due Week 13, 9am Tuesday 6
the of June
The annotated bibliography will be assessed on the quality and number of the references used and
the quality of the annotation (50%). The presentation will be assessed on content, visuals, body
message and your ability to answer questions (50%).
Annotated Bibliographies
You need to include a list of references (around 5) that you have used for your presentation. Your
presentation will be based upon material that you have read from a range of sources (peer-reviewed
journal articles, government reports, even webpages). You must critically evaluate which references
to include (e.g. a webpage that is on a university website has more legitimacy than a random blog
post). The references, which should be formatted in the Harvard style, should be annotated. This
need not be more than a paragraph and should include a brief summary of the whole article and,
most importantly, critically assess its usefulness to your chosen topic. Some questions you might
want to answer are: Why is it a good source? What are the important bits of information in the
article?
