300585 - Systems Analysis & Design
Workshop 7
Workshops will run to cover the practical aspects of the topic each week with two workshop case studies that runs across the whole semester and some other examples time to time. The workshop runs in two parts
Workshop Quiz
Students to visit app.gosoapbox.com, click Join and use access code ‘wsquiz’ to attempt the workshop quiz. Pls note this quiz is not assessable. Students must attempt this quiz in the time allocated by the workshop facilitator/tutor, followed by discussions on the student attempt and the topics
Workshop questions
This document contains 2 parts
Part A contains Classwork case study and questions that are done in workshop with the tutor in Groups of 2 students. Task 1 would always refer to Workshop Case study and some additional case studies in rest of the tasks
Part B contains questions and tasks related to case studies that individual students need to answer in their own time and submit as Portfolio exercises as per the Portfolio due dates given in the Learning guide.
Part A: Workshop work to be done during the workshop
Task 1
Willowbrook School is a small private school that has retained your services as a systems analyst to assist in the development of a new information system for the school’s administrative needs.
Background
After presenting the system requirements document to Willowbrook, the staff has approved your recommendations for a new computer system. Last workshop webegan the design phase of the SDLC and designed UIs for Michelle. This system for school would contain components such as students, staff, classrooms, after-care, payments and any other area that may be recognized in sprint review to be included in a working system.
This workshop we would design user interface including screens and forms for inputs, navigation and reports for outputs.
Please review the documentation you prepared during the systems analysis phase such as mind maps, user stories, and process diagrams and design these user interfaces for Willow brook.
Questions
Go through the reading slides for workshop in the readings section and attempt the following
Create a switchboard design with appropriate control buttons that lead to system component student. Please make sure that you consider any other area you think should be in a working system of your own design related to workflow related to UI for Michelle to enter & edit student details and generate reports.
Prepare storyboards that show lower-level menus including data entry screens. Allow Michelle to add, update, or delete student. Suggest context-sensitive and specific help and feedback for the proposed screens.
Suggest at least six types of data validation rules for three data entry screens created in part 2 above.
Task 2
Sandia Medical Devices (SMD) – Running Case study
In workshop 5, you identified user story where the patients would like to view their history. Please revisit the description in workshop 5 and then read below…
You have been asked to write a smartphone app to display this history. The smartphone app would connect to the monitor using Bluetooth and collect the previous 24 hours’ data. Using a drawing program such as https://app.moqups.com, sketch out the screen to view this history. Explain your screen(s) and controls—how they work and what they mean. Remember the principles you have learned, especially about affordance and visibility, and the capabilities of smartphones.
Consider the following points:
1. How could you use colors to indicate good/warning/critical readings?
2. How would you combine graphical display with actual numeric values? How would you display this information? What icons would you use?
3. How would you allow messages to be entered? Voice or text? How would you activate that feature? How would you play back or redisplay the messages?
4. How would you indicate the ability to transmit this data to the medical staff?
5. What changes would you make to the user interface if this were a tablet app instead of a smartphone?
Sketch out the screen(s) for a tablet app.
The following Web site shows a very small “on the belt” display. Your smartphone will have more built-in capabilities, but this Web site can give you a starting point.

Part B: Portfolio exercises to be included in Portfolio submissions
Task 1
Refer to Chapter case Tools 4 U (info given below) on page 339 of the textbook and attempt tasks 1, 3 and 4 listed as Q1,2,3 below.
Tools 4 U is a tool rental company that reaches out to people with little or no experience. The
firm has a staff of technicians to help customers select the right tools, show them how to use the
tools, and provide 24/7 support.
Background
The company is working on an online system to manage its growing business. The company asked you to help design the user interface.
Q1. Design a data entry screen for entering new members.
Q2. Suggest at least three data validation rules that might help reduce input errors for the video rental system.
Q3. Design a screen for managers, with weekly and monthly data on rentals, new customers, late charges, and anything else you think a store manager might want to review. Be sure to include numeric activity and dollar totals.
Task 2
Read Capstone Case: New Century Wellness group as given below and on page 340 in the textbook and answer tasks 1,3 and 4 listed as Q1,2,3 below
Background
Based on your presentation to New Century’s partners, they decided to move forward with in-house development of a new business support system. They liked the idea of a vertical software package, but they want to be able to customize the user interface because New Century’s business functions are more varied. However, it is very important that the new system allow future integration with vertical packages such as electronic health records, computerized provider order entry, and a clinical decision support system. Using the information you gained in the systems planning and analysis phases of the SDLC, you sit down to begin designing the user interface of the New Century’s business support system. Before you begin, you decide to review the case studies, and diagrams you prepared in previous workshops for this case.
Q1. Using the guidelines and suggestions in lecture 7, design a user interface(s). Draw storyboards, then use another form-designing application such as https://app.moqups.com/ to create the screens.
Q2. What control features will you use in the input screens to aid in data entry? Give a specific example of how you will use at least eight different control features in the design of the user interface.
Q3. In addition to printed reports, what other output technologies could be used by New Century?
