3.0 Task
Your team is nearing the completion of the project. Through this assignment, you should
demonstrate key knowledge areas of project management as listed in PMBOK®. Working individually, the four individual submissions from your team members should complete all the tasks as listed below. There are four tasks in total. Each member of the team will complete one different task so that all the four tasks would be properly addressed within a team.
TASK 1 (for team member 1)
1. List out the local government’s legal prerequisite for starting your engineering project.
2. What are the potential dangers of proceeding with a project that has no SMART objectives? Write three objectives of the project your team has been doing in for last 10 weeks. Your objectives must be based on SMART concept.
3. What is project network diagram? What are two methods of representing the network diagram? Draw the
network diagram for the following project case.
Activity Duration (days) Predecessors
A 3 --
B 2 A
C 4 B
D 6 B
E 1 C,D
F 5 C
G 3 E,F
H 2 D,G
Show the task column and predecessors column of the project your team has been doing in for last 10 weeks as entered in MS PROJECT. The predecessor’s column should show at least three types of task relationships. Explain the logic for choosing S-S, F-F & S-F relationship between the tasks.
4. For project your team has been doing for the last 10 weeks, in the project review meeting on 15/04/2017 with the client, you as the project manager reported 50% completion of the project. The client wanted you to finished the project 5 days earlier than the original plan. Show the status of the project on 15/04/2017 in MS PROJECT. Include snapshot of tracking Gnatt, show snap shot of tracking table with base line and actual date. Also, include snapshot of crashed project showing the new finish date, tracking cost table. From the tracking cost table find out the cost of crashing for the crashed activities.
TASK 2 (For team member 2)
1. What is white card in Australia? Do you require white card for the project your team has been working for
last 10 weeks?
2. Explain the two approaches for developing the project budget? Discuss their advantages and disadvantages. Which approach you used for preparing budget of the project your team has been doing for last 10 weeks. Provide the details of your budget as per the approach you adopted.
3. What is critical path and its significance in a project. Draw the critical path for the following network
diagram (use forward pass and backward pass)
In MS PROJECT, show the critical path of the project your team has been doing for last 10 weeks. Explain it. Why the tasks on critical path has zero slack/float? Show the slack time/float for few activities outside the critical path.
4. For the project your team has been working on last 10 weeks, one of the work resource has two different cost rates for two different tasks assigned to the resource. Provide the snapshots of MS PROJECT showing two different rates for the resource. Also, provide the snapshot of MS PROJECT showing the cost of assigned tasks to the resource with different cost rates.
TASK 3 (For team member 3)
1. List down all the material resources of the project your team has been working for last 10 weeks. What are
the danger of handling these materials and how do you ensure safe handling of these materials?
2. What are risks in a project? How they can be characterized in a simplest of ways. Risks can be mitigated, transferred, accepted or avoided. For the project that your team has been working on for last 10 weeks, write the following
• One risk related to your project that can be mitigated how can you mitigate that risk?
• One risk to your project that can be transferred & how that risk can be transferred?
• One risk to your project that can be accepted & why do you accept that risk?
• One risk to your project that can be avoided & how that risk can be avoided?
3. What is resource over allocation in a project. In a project Maria has been assigned to tasks A to G. She cannot work more than 8 hrs a day. She must finish task A before starting any other task. The project manager has specified the dates by which she must finish each task. These dates are marked in RED. For example, activity A must finish by 5th may and B by 12th May and so on. Maria has planned her work as per the following table where against each activity she wrote numbers of hour she would be working for that activity. You as a project manager was not happy with Maria’s work plan and reconfigured her plan. Why did you reconfigure Maria’s work plan? Write the reconfigured work plan for Maria.
Provide the MS PROJECT resource sheet of the project your team has been working on for last 10 weeks. Which resources in the sheet are most susceptible to over allocation and why? Explain the techniques you would apply to resolve over allocation issue and how these techniques would affect your project end date.
4. For the project your team has been working for last 10 weeks, show the baseline cost of each task in MS PROJECT. Explain task cost and resource cost variance if any with the help of appropriate snapshot of MS PROJECT.
TASK 4 (For team member 4)
1. Explain project management iron triangle with respect to the project your team has been working on for
last 10 weeks. How change in (i) project cost & (ii) project time going to affect your project and why?
2. An accident has happened on the project site and one worker is injured. As the project manager, how you
handled this incident. Also, list out the steps taken to prevent such accidents in future.
3. What is project crashing? Explain the methods to crash a project. What is significance of project crashing? Status of a project as on 1/04/2016 is given in the following table. Fixed cost of the project overhead is
Project Status on 1/04/2016- Project Running late by 3 days, Activities A & B are 100% completed
Normal Project Crashed Project
Activity Cost Duration DAYS) Cost Duration (Days)
A 5,000 4 7000 3
B* 10,000 7 10700 4
C 3,500 2 4000 1
D* 4,500 7 5800 4
E 1,500 3 2300 2
F* 6,000 9 6750 7
G 4,000 7 5300 5
H* 8,000 6 9200 4
$450 per week. There is an incentive of $500/day for reducing the project time and penalty of $400/day for delay. You as the project manager decide on sequence of activities to be crashed. Activities of critical path are marked with *. Can you crash the project by 7 days?
4. a) Consider you are a project manager for the company. The client wants tracking to be done to ensure project completes on time. List out the obstacles while tracking the project and give a brief explanation on the each possible solution to avoid the conflicts.
b) What is tracking in Gantt chart? Perform the following tasks in MS project & use snapshots wherever
necessary.
• Show tracking of your project in MS project by setting baseline as 70%.
• Due to obstacles while execution of the project, some of the tasks are incomplete. Use tracking module in MS project and show the tasks, which are affected & highlight the amount of work completed of the affected tasks.
4.0 Submission Requirements
The following are submission requirements for all student teams.
• This assignment is to be completed and submitted by each team member. When put together, all the four submissions from a team must complete all the four tasks mentioned in section 3.0. The quality of the individual submission and all the submission from a team will be the reflection of synergy in the team. It is highly recommended that before the submission, the whole team should meet and go through the work of other team members to ensure that all the four tasks are addressed.
• The total page limit for each submission should not be more than 3 pages (excluding assignment
cover sheet, MS PROJECT snapshots, Tables and Appendix 1).
• All the content in snapshots of MS PROJECT should be clearly visible. Poor quality snapshots (blurred image or too small) will be rejected without any further explanation.
• Each submission (individual) should start with a brief description of the project and should include a separate section on project evaluation describing the success/failure the project in terms of time, cost and project objectives.
• You should use an appropriate academic writing style and include a list of references. Refer to Deakin’s Guide to Assignment Writing and Referencing, available online from Student Life, for assistance on appropriate report styles and referencing.
• Read the Assessment Criteria for guidance on how this assignment will be marked. Make sure that any analysis you present is your own – not simply a summary of what is presented in source or reference materials.
• The submitted report file format must be MS Word (Student name-team#-Task#.doc or .docx) and
make sure your submission is made with in the respective team folder.
• Don’t waste time with fancy layouts, colours, cover pages, and so on. A simple text- based format is all that is needed with the report layout consisting of a few sections of text (with section headings). Use photos or diagrams sparingly and only if necessary and/or relevant to include in your report. Just use a basic and common text font such as Arial or Times New Roman with at least
10-point font size for body text. Single-spaced paragraphs are acceptable.
• Don’t be tempted to plagiarise. If you unsure what constitutes plagiarism, cheating, or collusion then refer to the Academic Honesty information provided for all units on DSO in the Unit Guide and Information folder.
• Online and in-person resources and materials are available from Student Life for all students to assist with assignment writing and referencing skills. Student Life also provides online and in- person resources to assist with understanding plagiarism and how to avoid producing it in your academic work.
