LAN6271 Teaching ESL Learners
Assignment 2: Syllabus Design Due 9am AWST Monday 29th May 2017
Description and purpose Using an appropriate syllabus, you are required to submit for this assignment, a suitable language teaching unit of work for a group of students with similar needs to your learner from Assignment 1: Needs Analysis. This unit of work should include enough detail to be sufficient for at least 3 hours (3 lessons) of teaching and learning and aim to address the needs you indicated and prioritised in your first assignment. You can develop a syllabus for a longer period of time, e.g., a week, month or school term however, the longer the period of time you select, the less level of detail you can incorporate. Start planning early and look through the syllabus types covered in the unit material before deciding on the syllabus type you would like to select.
The process There are 4 parts to this syllabus design assignment: 1. Justification of syllabus type selected 2. Unit of work 3. Justification of how the unit of work exemplifies the syllabus type 4. Anticipating problems
Please use the above 4 parts as headings in your assignment. The Assessment Criteria on the next page has detailed information about each part, as well as the number of marks allotted to each subsection.
Specifications • Due by 9am AWST Monday 29th May via Turnitin. Please make sure that your assignment is contained in one pdf file. This one pdf file must include any related appendices and a completed ECU cover sheet. • Suggested word count: 2,000 words (± 300). I recommend putting your lesson plan (unit of work) in a table, so this is not included in your word limit as what matters is your discussion and analysis. Please include a statement of word count in your document. • Any references must be cited in APA 6th. Check the ECU Referencing Guide for how to do this. You should put all the references together at the end (before any appendices). You do not have to cite lecture slides for this class. As always, avoid plagiarism. The Unit Plan has a link to relevant information on the ECU website. • Points will be subtracted for work that contains mechanical errors. This includes problems with grammar, punctuation, or odd word choice. Make sure that your work meets the high standards of English that one would expect of an English teacher. Revise your work and remember to make use of the ECU Learning Consultants if needed.
Assignment 2: Syllabus Design Criteria 1. Justification of syllabus type selected Based on the biographical statement, level and needs from your Assignment 1 learner (as determined in your needs analysis), you will develop a unit of work for a group of learners based on the syllabus type that you deem to be the most suitable for the learners and their needs. You will need to restate information regarding the learner needs analysis from Assignment 1, so as to remind the reader of your assignment. You will need to justify why you selected this syllabus type for these learners. Details about the learner, including a biographical statement of learners (age, sex, L1 & L2 backgrounds etc.), statement of school context (e.g., type of school, class sizes, etc.), learners’ proficiency level, and their immediate and long-term language learning needs 5 Statement of syllabus type (e.g., structural, functional, task-based, situational, content-based etc.) 5 Argument for why this syllabus type is most suited to your learners’ needs 10 Marks for this section 20
2. Unit of work Present the unit of work as a series of lesson plans, or in a format you prefer. This could be in a table format with a column for each lesson and rows for lesson objectives, materials, activities, assessment, etc. Further, explain how sequencing, continuity and development are constructed over the unit of work. Statement of overall goals for the unit of work. Make this a very broad overview of the overarching goals you would like to achieve in a unit of work which consists of about 6-8 lessons. Briefly detail what will be in each of the lessons to show cohesion and achievement of these overarching goals (a table is good for this part). 10 Now zoom in for a close look at your chosen three lessons (three hours of teaching and learning). • What are the objectives for these lessons? • What activities are in these lessons? • What kinds of materials and resources will you use? • What kinds of teaching methodologies will you use? 10 Statement explaining how these three lessons and their activities will be sequenced and why you have sequenced both the three lessons and their activities in this particular way 10 Statement of assessment type (when, how, and why) 5 Marks for this section 35
3. Justification of how the unit of work exemplifies the syllabus type Justify how the unit of work you developed represents the syllabus you selected with specific reference to the unit of work. Argue why and how your developed unit of work fits the syllabus type previously identified in Part 1 (e.g., structural, functional, task-based, skill-based, content-based, etc.). 5 References made to the literature 10 Marks for this section 15
4. Anticipating problems You need to identify the possible problems and difficulties that may arise when teaching begins, and how you will deal with such problems if and when they arise. Statement of potential problems arising out of teaching using your syllabus choice 10 Statement of how you would handle such problems 10 Marks for this section 20 APA 6th edition referencing, mechanics, and word limit 10 Total marks 100
The 100 marks in this assignment amount to 40% of your total grade for this unit.
