29/03/16   1   MODULE: Evaluating Qualitative Research LECTURE: Quality in qualitative research PUBH5500  Advanced  Qualita:ve  Health  Research   QUAL5005  Introducing  Qualita:ve  Health  Research   Common things that go wrong in the evaluation assessment http://www.abb-conversations.com/2014/03/patently-doing-better/ FEEDING  FORWARD   All  descrip:on;  No  evalua:on     • The  task  is  to  evaluate  the  quality  (strengths   and  weaknesses)  of  the  paper     • You  have  to  make  a  judgement!  Did  they  do   the  most  appropriate  thing?  Enough?     • If  you  think  they  missed  something,  say  why   it  ma1ers  that  they  didn’t  do  it   What  are  you  judging  the  paper   against?     • Be  upfront  about  what  framework  you  are   using  to  structure  your  evalua:on     • Use  your  evalua:on  framework  as  a  catalyst,   not  a  checklist   • If  you  don’t  understand  the  principles  of   qualita:ve  research  then  any  framework  will   be  useless.       What  are  you  judging  the  paper   against?       Applying  inappropriate  criteria/principles  to   qualita:ve  research     Not  applying  the  principles  we  have   discussed  in  class       Was:ng  words  on  qualita:ve  research  in   general  –  only  want  talk  about  the  principles   that  are  relevant  to  this  paper.   Evidence   • If  you  make  a  claim  about  how  things   should  be  in  qualita:ve  research,  back  it   up  with  evidence     J  This  shi_  consequently  marks  the  expanding  interest  that   researchers  have  had  in  examining  the  experiences,  beliefs  and   aatudes  of  people  affected  or  involved  in  the  delivery  of   health  care.2     29/03/16   2   Evidence   • If  you  make  a  claim  about  something   the  researchers  have  said,  back  it  up:     J  For  example,  the  authors  state  that  prac::oners  “told  us  that  they   would  look  through  guidelines  at  their  leisure”  (p1014)     L  There  is  an  in-­‐depth  descrip:on  of  the  analysis  process  .   Answer  the  ques:on   • Be  clear  about  what  the  CASP  or   evalua:on  framework  is  asking  of  you   • EG  Don’t  talk  about  recruitment  or  data   collec:on  in  a  sec:on  on  methodology   Structure   • This  is  an  essay,  CASP  gives  structure   • Do  not  submit  a  list  of  CASP  ques:ons   with  bullet  points,  or  a  few  short   sentences.     L  There  was  an  account  and  a  box  diagram  of  how  data  were  collected   and  from  what  sources.  The  authors  claim  to  have  established  an  auditable   trail,  accoun:ng  for  all  elements  of  their  data  collec:on   Structure   • An  opening  statement.  Consider  a   sentence  like:  In  this  essay  I  will…     • A  closing  statement.  Consider  a   sentence  like:  Overall,  the  quality  of  the   paper…  Or:  On  balance,  the  paper…   Integrity  in  wri:ng   • Reference  all  papers/material  you  refer   to   • Direct  quotes?  Reference  properly   (enclose  with  speech  marks,  include   page,  author,  date)   • Reference  list  at  the  end   Things  that  irritate     Nit  picking  –  ask  yourself,  is  this  issue   fatal  or  trivial?     Geang  study  details  wrong  –  it’s  not  a   long  paper,  read  it  carefully.       Lots  of  gramma:cal  or  spelling  errors  –   read  your  assignment  before  you  submit.
