Background
BrisGames Pty Ltd are game developers in Brisbane who have been in business for the last four years, since the partners left University. Over the last year, they have produced two very successful mobile games which they are selling through the Apple store and the Google play store. They are currently engaging in maintaining and producing new levels of these games as well as working on a completely new game. They would also like to expand into console PC games. Due to this success, they have grown from the original business, of the two partners Joan Black and David White who did everything to a staff of 10 developers, a part time accountant and two support staff. They also outsource some User interface coding to a firm in India. The two partners travel for business often both within Australia and overseas. They maintain contact with the office while away and will often do some coding work while away.
Now, the partners manage BrisGames together, with one partner taking a lead role while the other one is away. However, there has been times recently that both partners were away at the same time. They also have two investors, three developers who were employed early in BrisGames growth who share profits and substantial bank loans.
Currently the developers must use the organisational machines to write code which has been standardised to a Windows desktop. However, there are continual requests from the developers to either use their own machine to code (BYOD) or to be issued with another type of machine such as an Apple or a particular brand of laptop. This is also a problem when recruiting staff who are not happy with no choice of machine.
They are currently using a private repository on GitHub as a versioning system, which is convenient. They are selling their games currently through the iTunes and Google Play stores. The target platforms currently include: Windows 7, Windows 10, Mac OSX, Android 6.x and iOS 10.x.
BrisGames has grown rapidly over the last year and the two partners feel like the IT infrastructure has grown on an as needed basis rather than a plan. Although they both have very good technical skills they have had no experience working within organisational systems. They feel unsure if their system is sufficiently secure to protect their intellectual property in the games, they also want to feel that they have IT governance including policies, security and growth plans in place for the business. This is to ensure that they can focus on producing good quality successful games. They also want to make sure that they are attracting and retaining the best available staff.
As part of this process they wish to investigate and implement a continuous integration system, this system will include automatic testing of the developed software across multiple platforms. They also wish to investigate a cost-benefit analysis of implementing the continuous integration system using cloud-based servers versus privately owned servers. This project will require a considerable investment of resources and the partners wish to use this project to demonstrate to stakeholders they are capable of expanding the business. The partners see this project as an essential pathway to growing their business and are concerned that this project is managed carefully to bring about a successful conclusion. The post at this link http://www.netobjectives.com/blogs/cost-implementing-continuous-integration may help, planning this project. At the moment they consider six months to be a reasonable time frame for the project but are willing to be guided by your report.
You have been requested to prepare a report by the owners, although they have good technical knowledge, this report may be read by associated business people such as investors and bankers.
It is important to achieve well in this assignment that you discuss this ICT project for BrisGames not ICT projects in general.
