Individual assessmentTask 1 - Identifying Your Own
Values
What are values?
• Values are guiding principles that help you make rational decisions
consistently – they are really important – they sit at your core being.
• You must aim to never compromise any of your values.
• This may mean making changes to avoid compromising.
What are some values (there are hundreds of values)?
Integrity Honesty Respect Loyalty
Respect Friendship Acceptance Quality
Balance Excellence Fairness Patient
Persistence Playfulness Power Teamwork
Tidy Self-control Giving Flexible
Honour Passion Family FearlessnessStarting - Step One…
• Defining your identity; including your strengths, weaknesses,
preferences and long-term ambitions.
• When you understand who you are and where you are going it is
easier to identify your values that will guide your life and will help you
reach your desired “life destination”.How to identify your values?
Questions:
• What are my qualities and strengths?
• What are my weaknesses/development needs?
• What am I doing to build alliances?
• What do I enjoy most?
• How can I shape my career goals around what I enjoy?
• What is one accomplishment I must make in my life?
• How could I correct or compensate for my weaknesses to
ensure accomplishment of my long-term goals?Step Two…
• Defining your desired “life destination” – your destiny
• Your destiny will be determined by daily choices and
long-term goals (5 -10 years) you set.
• Once you have identified the one accomplishment you
most want to make, you need to start mapping a life plan
that will get you there. Answering the following questions
is a good start. How to define your destiny?
Questions
• What previous experiences or education will help me
arrive at my desired destination?
• How can my current academic situation help to lead me
to my desired destination?
• What will my life look like when I have arrived at my
destination?
• Who can assist me on my journey?
• What kind of people will I spend time with when I have
arrived?
• How will I know when I’ve arrived?Final Step…
• Is to make the right decisions along the journey.
• When we have values that govern our decision making;
we become more judicial, better at making the right
decisions for ourselves.
• Why? Because we are able to align our values and
actions in times of crisis and change; giving us an edge
over most other people.Hard Skills Soft Skills
Learned skills and skills trained for -
related to your career or profession
Soft skills are essentially interpersonal or
people skills
Hard skills are considered tangible skills
because they are easily identified and
measured with things like tests and exams
Soft skills can be easily observed in people but
they are not as easily measured. Soft skills are
considered intangible
For example: technical, mechanical,
administrative or accounting skills
Skills that require knowledge of computers,
writing, speaking a second language,
operating a machine, driving a car, etc.
Soft skills = three categories:
1. Skills that allow you to interact well with coworkers and clients - such as networking,
communication
2. Skills that demonstrate work ethic and
professionalism - like appropriate dress,
enthusiasm and motivation
3. Critical thinking and problem solving skills
Other soft skills - self-esteem, self-control, time
