Assessment Item 3 – Case Analysis
Length / Duration: 2500 words
Weighting: 50%
Content: This case study analysis requires you to apply theory to gain insight into a business situation, and then provide recommendations based on theory on how to improve the situation.
Assessment Type:
A case study is a way to apply the theoretical knowledge gained from the academic literature to real life situations that you may encounter in your work. You need to apply theory and concepts discussed in ORGANISATIONAL CULTURE, LEADERSHIP and ORGANISATIONAL CHANGE PowerPoint Presentations (attached) to identify the issues occurring in the case and provide recommendations on how to address the issues.
Writing a case study response requires you to:
Relate theory to a practical situation by applying the ideas and knowledge discussed in ORGANISATIONAL CULTURE, LEADERSHIP and ORGANISATIONAL CHANGE PowerPoint Presentations(attached) to the practical situation at hand in the case study.
Identify the problems
Select the major problems in the case
Suggest solutions to these major problems
Recommend the best Evidence Based solutions to be implemented
Task Overview:
You need to analyse the Green Haven case (see Green Haven Case Word doc attached) and identify the major problems that exist at Green Haven and suggest solution to these problems.
This assessment item is worth 50% of your overall grade, and is designed for you to:
• develop an awareness of and focus on evidence based management;
• apply organisational behaviour theories to diagnose issues; and
• develop evidence based recommendations to address the issues identified.
Remember, this case analysis is about you demonstrating your understanding of organisational behaviour theories and research, so it is critical that you clearly demonstrate how your analysis of the key issues and recommendations are derived/supported/informed by relevant theory.
You need to make a decision about what unit content/organisational behaviour theories are most relevant to the case. The content from ORGANISATIONAL CHANGE will definitely be applicable but you may also need to draw and apply content from the ORGANISATIONAL CULTURE, LEADERSHIP, for example leadership theories. There are numerous issues you could discuss so you will need to prioritise which ones you feel are most important and crucial. There are multiple correct answers to the case. The most important thing is HOW well you have applied relevant theory to identify issues and provide EVIDENCE BASED recommendations.
Recommended Structure for your Case Analysis Submission
We recommend you use the following structure:
INTRODUCTION
Introduce the main purpose of the case study and outline the overall issue to be addressed.
DISCUSSION
Discuss the major issues identified one by one, using information gained from your research of the academic literature
For Each Topic (Organisational Culture, Leadership, Organisational Change) - tell What is Broken? - Why is this important? / Why you chose this issue? - Then – What is the new Option - Implementation of the Theory/Model
• Issue Identification: Identify the problems found in the case. Each analysis of a problem should be supported by information given in the case together with the relevant theory and course concepts. Here, it is important to identify the underlying problems, for example: staff turnover may be only a symptom of the underlying problem of poor job design.
• Alternative Solutions: Identify alternative solutions- ALTERNATIVE THEORIES (not just your idea) to this/these major problem/s (have More Than One possible solution per problem). Briefly outline EACH alternative solution and EVALUATE them in terms of its advantages and disadvantages.
!!!!Only have models/theories from attached PowerPoints Slides on:!!!
ORGANISATIONAL CULTURE (Artefacts of culture and Organisation Culture Types)
LEADERSHIP (Transformational Leadership and Contingency Approach- Path-Goal theory)
ORGANISATIONAL CHANGE (Lewin’s force field analysis model and Kotter’s Change model)
Hints and Tips for the Discussion Section
• This section is often divided into sub-sections, one for each problem/issue.
• It is important that both the issue identification and discussion of alternative solutions is EVIDENCE based, that is derived from and supported by theory in the ORGANISATIONAL CULTURE, LEADERSHIP and ORGANISATIONAL CHANGE PowerPoint Presentation Slides!
Very thorough understanding of organisational behaviour (OB) Concepts and Theory MUST be shown through accurate Definition and Description of Key principles and WHY they are relevant and applicable to the case. Evaluation of case study MUST show highly Appropriate Application of organisational behaviour (OB) concepts and theory to provide High level Insight into HOW or WHY the organisational behaviour occurred.
CONCLUSION AND RECOMMENDATIONS
Recommendations are closely based on the analysis of the case study. They MUST provide a specific course of action to embed effective organisational behaviours into future situations and show a depth of understanding of OB concepts and theory.
• Sum up the main points from the findings and discussion.
• Provide a clear statement of your recommendations to resolve the issues in the case.
Reference List (not include in word count):
• A reference list is required. Use APA (6th edition) format.
ETHICAL CONSIDERATIONS (included in word count)
This is a discrete stand-alone section at the end of your case analysis. You need to identify the major ethical considerations/issues in the case and suggest how they may be resolved or managed.
An ethical dilemma/issue associated with the MUST be clearly identified through a sophisticated analysis which demonstrates a thorough understanding of its scope, scale, and impact in the context of the case study. Recommendation(s) to address ethical dilemma/issue MUST be highly appropriate, practical, and well justified.
Ethical consideration component of case analysis: See ETHICAL COSIDERATIONS word document (attached) !!!! on how to address the ethical consideration component of your case analysis.
For the case analysis, you need to identify any situation in the case that necessitates a choice being made among competing sets of principles, values, beliefs, or ideals. Most often these trade-offs in a change situation are between utility (the value delivered to the organization or stakeholders), rights (entitlement to something), and/or justice (equitable sharing of pain and benefit). Most ethical issues involve conflict between the interests of different groups or between the needs of the individual versus the needs of the organisation.
Suggest a course of action to address the identified issue, ensure that you provide JUSTIFICATION for your choice. – Ethical considerations part MUST Follow the A Process approach to ethical decision-making document!!! (attached)
