Appendix One
Suppose your service company runs a call centre and is considering system changes in an effort to increase ‘operator’ productivity for the centre. The centre answers an average 14400 calls per week. There are 10 operators. They work 8 hours per day, 6 days per week. The new system will give the centre the capability to answer 15120 calls per week with 7 operators. The accounting department reports that actual costs are: overheads $2000, wages $8000 and materials $1000 pwk.
a. Calculate the labor and multifactor productivity for the current situation (operator/hour).
b. Calculate the labor and multifactor productivity for the system change (operator/hour).
c. Are there any service quality considerations that should be accounted for?
d. Suppose that the call centre adopts the new system. Is the change a productivity increase? Explain briefly.
Assume your manufacturing company needs to make 100,000 products per month to meet demand. Each month contains 20 working days, each of which allows for 3 separate 8-hour shifts.
(a) If a worker can produce 10 parts/hour, how many workers are needed on each shift?
(b) If each shift has 100 workers, what is the productivity of an individual worker?
(c) If material costs are $10/part, capital costs are $100,000 and labour costs are $10/hour, what is the multifactor productivity of the plant from part (a)?
d) If the facility has to increase its production to 150,000 products due to a technology upgrade what will the new labour factor productivity be for the facility?
