Why is motivation important
In groups discuss:
• What is motivation?
• What motivates you - come up with a list
of 5 key motivators
• When have not been motivated to do
something?
• What caused this?
Theories of Motivation
• Theories give us an opportunity to explore
why
• They give us a framework to explain
• They come from different perspectives
• However many managers do not think in
theory…often they ‘just do’ what has
worked in the past
• You can accept or challenge theories…..

McClelland: Three-Needs Theory
• Need for achievement (nAch): to do
something better or more efficiently
• Need for power (nPower): to control
other people, to influence their behaviour,
or to be responsible for them
• Need for affiliation (nAff): to establish
and maintain friendly and warm relations
Expectancy Theory25/03/2017

Equity Theory
Goal Setting Theory
• Goal-setting theory:
–Managers must set clear and specific
goals.
–Employees must accept the goals as
their own.
–Goals must be difficult but not
impossible to achieve.
–Managers must give the employee
frequent feedback on performance.
Reinforcement Theory
• Reinforcement theory
–Focuses on rewards and punishments
and the effect they have on behaviour.
–Based on the law of effect (behaviour
that results in a pleasant outcome is
likely to be repeated).
–Companies may make mistakes – for
instance, they may seek teamwork, but
reward individuals.25/03/2017
