Theories of Motivation • Theories give us an opportunity to explore why • They give us a framework to explain • They come from different perspectives • However many managers do not think in theory…often they ‘just do’ what has worked in the past • You can accept or challenge theories….. Reinforcement Theory • Reinforcement theory –Focuses on rewards and punishments and the effect they have on behaviour. –Based on the law of effect (behaviour that results in a pleasant outcome is likely to be repeated). –Companies may make mistakes – for instance, they may seek teamwork, but reward individuals.25/03/2017 6 Quiz Checkpoint • McClelland thinks that having a high need for achievement (nAch) means that a person wants warm and friendly relations.
