In short, climate change is the rise in average surface
temperatures on Earth, mostly due to burning of fossil fuels.
Climate change is also called as global warming which refers to
the rise in average surface temperatures on Earth. An
overwhelming scientific consensus maintains that climate change
is due primarily to the human use of fossil fuels, which releases
carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases into the air. The gases
trap heat within the atmosphere, which can have a range of
effects on ecosystem, including rising sea levels, severe weather
events.
What are the causes of climate change?
The primary cause of climate change is burning of fossil fuels, such
as oil and coals, which emits greenhouse gases into the
atmosphere- primarily carbon dioxide. Other human activities,
such as agriculture and deforestation, also contribute to the
proliferation of greenhouse gases that cause climate change.
While some quantities of these gases are naturally occurring and
critical part of Earth’s temperature control system. The
atmospheric concentration of CO2 did not rise above 200 parts per
million between the advent of human civilization roughly 10,000
years ago and 1900. Today is about 440 ppm, a level not reached
in more than 40,000 years.
Effects of climate change?
Even the small increases in earth’s temperature caused by climate
change can have severe effects. The earth’s average temperaturehas gone up 1.4°F over the past century and is expected to rise as
much as 11.5°F over the next. That might not seem like a lot, but
the average temperature during the last Ice Age was about 4°
Flower than it is today.
Rising sea levels due to the melting of the polar ice caps
(again, caused by climate change) contribute to greater storm
damage; warming ocean temperatures are associated with
stronger and more frequent storms; additional rainfall,
particularly during severe weather events, leads to flooding and
other damage; an increase in the incidence and severity of
wildfires threatens habitats, homes, and lives; and heat waves
contribute to human deaths and other consequences.
Among all scientists, scientific organizations, and government states
that the climate change happening and is caused by human and human
activity. Climate change deniers often claim the recent changes
attributed to human activity can be seen as part of the natural
variations in Earth’s climate and temperature, and that it is difficult or
impossible to establish a direct connection between climate change
and any single weather event, such as a hurricane. While the latter is
generally true, decades of data and analysis support the reality of
climate change- and the human factor in this process. In any case,
economists agree that acting to reduce fossil fuel emissions would be
far less expensive than dealing with the consequences of not doing so.
China is one of the most serious countries which are affected by climate
change. China has been the world’s largest greenhouse gas (GHG)
emitter since 2006. Under the Copenhagen Accord, China pledged to
reduce its emissions intensity by 40-45% from 2005 levels by 2020. In a
joint announcement with the United States in Beijing in November2014, China announced two new goals: peaking greenhouse gas
emissions by around 2030, and increasing non-fossil sources to 20
percent of total energy by 2030. China later included these two goals in
its intended nationally determined contribution (INDC) to the new
international climate agreement to be concluded in Paris in December
2015, along with a goal of reducing carbon intensity 60-65 percent
below 2005 levels by 2030.
Coal burning is the biggest contributor of air pollution in cities. Coal
burning factories emits huge amount of smog which is present in
Beijing. These factories rely on outdated and inefficient technologies.
2. Introduction of pollution in china
In china, Beijing is not only cities whose air is polluted nearly 300
cities in china that has badly failed air-quality standard
measurements in 2015, according to data collected by
Greenpeace. And the effects are devastating: More than 1.6
million people per year die in China from breathing toxic air. To
fight back, china’s leaders have been waging a tough war on
pollution by rolling out new technologies, capping coal use and
using more renewable energy, such as solar and wind.
Air pollution is clearly very costly, through to its $11- trillion-plus
economy. It dings China’s GDP about 6.5 percent annually,
according to RAND Corp. estimates. Those costs are mainly driven
by lost productivity, since factories are shut down on bad air days
to avoid the dangerous health effects of breathing the dense,
toxic air. High levels of pollution are linked to serious chronic
illnesses, like heart disease and lung cancer, which are costly totreat. And air pollution also affects tourism and outdoor
recreation.
Even the crops in china are damaged too. Some 20 percent of
china’s soil is contaminated. The country largest rice-growing
province, Hunan, has the soil that’s laced with heavy metals from
factories. This pollution taints the country food supply, according
to reports.
Not only health consequences but also other harmful emission led
to hundreds of flight cancellation and frequent road closure due
to low visibility.
3. Impacts of air pollution
Air pollution in china is mainly caused by burning coal in factories
and power plants and oil combustion by vehicles. Air pollution has
long-term health impacts that build-up slowly over time. It may
also cause non-specific problems, such as weakened immunity. It
is often easy to overlook the health impacts of air pollution. That’s
why public education and outreach on the issue of air pollution is
highly important.
Air pollution has been linked to increased incidences of cancer,
heart disease, stroke and respiratory illnesses. On a less severe
level, it is associated with asthma in children, and thus impaired of
life for many kids.4. Remedial Measure of air pollution in china
China’s cabinet has outlined measures aimed at improving the
countries air pollution problems, which have plagued many of its
larger cities over recent years.
One of the main measures, announced in state media over the
weekend, is a target to reduce emission from heavily polluting
industries by 30% by the end of 2017. In January and February
2013 air pollution levels in the capital Beijing and a number of
other cities rose to what are believed to have been record levels.
Beijing was shrouded in a thick cloud of smog. On more than one
occasion the US embassy in the city, which monitors air quality
and publishes the result on a Twitter feed, described the levels as
“beyond index”.
The new measures do not outline which industries would be
included in the 30% target. However, in February in response to
the air pollution crisis and a high level of public outcry, the
government announced that sic heavily polluting industries
including iron and steel, cement and petro chemicals would have
to comply with special emission limits.
Another new measures announced is to “enhance control” of
PM2.5 pollution, which are fine particulates that measures less
than 2.5 microns in diameter. The Chinese authorities only started
to measures this type of pollution in Beijing in October 2012. This
type of pollution is considered particularly dangerous to health as
the fine particularly dangerous to health as the fine particles can
lodge deep within the lungs and enter the blood stream. The
statement said that a ranking of air quality in major cities should
be made public.Few measures outlined by state council are:
There will be strict controls for heavily polluting industries that
are looking to expand.
Emergency response plans will be carried out by local
governments during periods of bad pollution which include
restricting traffic and limiting emissions from the industry.
The construction projects should pass environmental evaluations
to get permission to go start the work.
5. Conclusion
Our report is presenting about the pollution caused by factories,
industries and its impact to environment, climate change, lifestyle
and health in China. Global warming is a serious problem that we
should not neglect it, in this case air pollution is mainly caused by
burning coal in factories and power plants and oil combustion by
vehicles, and the affection that many people are dying due to the
polluted air which they are breathing, the soil where they farm,
the water they drink. Moreover, the air pollution is clearly very
costly, though its $11 trillion plus economy. Millions of people in
china are breathing a hazardous cocktail of chemicals every day.
These chemicals caused by factories, power plant are responsible
for heart diseases, stroke, respiratory illness, birth defects and
cancer. Along with health consequences, high levels of harmful
emissions have led to hundreds of flight cancellations and
frequent road closures due to low visibility level.6. Reference:
