Assessment 3: HINTS
Dr Stephen Fanning for FBL5020
Assessment 2 was not a difficult assessment and a number of students did exceptionally well and, therefore,
need very little assistance in this area. However, there are some that need a helping hand. This to be expected,
particularly if this is the first time doing such a task. I have put two ‘suggested’ templates on Blackboard and an
essay that provides an example of structure – please have a look.
I had a question from a student who is still uncertain as to how to start.
When I look through this particular student’s proposal it is rich in information regarding film inspired tourism,
however, the unit learning is rather light – this is not unusual – and I often say do not fall in love with the topic
and ignore the unit learning [where the marks are]. It clearly did not identify what concepts would be discussed,
however, choice being influenced by ‘customer involvement’ was inferred in the literature review on the excel
spreadsheet.
Based on this an in the interest of assisting all students; I thought I would do a rough plan of a basic business
essay. Here is how I would approach it – some may approach it differently.
[1] I would select a title that reflects the focus of the paper, for example
An exploration of films and destination choice
[2] Then I would construct an abstract – in this case for the film topic. This structure could be adapted for all
topics.
Abstract: The purpose of this [paper] is to explore the relationships between film locations and consumer
decision making. Initially, we will provide a review of the literature that explores how films have created consumer
awareness, interest, desire, and action. Then, we will explore relevant marketing concepts from a contemporary
marketing text, with particular emphasis on the buyer decision process. This will be followed by a synthesis of the
literature and marketing concepts and a discussion on how a travel organisation may benefit from this
knowledge. The primary conclusion is that film tourism influences consumer choice, however, this varies
according to the level of consumer involvement. From a travel organisation’s perspective there may be
opportunities to package film locations to suit individual consumer preferences.
[3] Then, I would do a background introduction – what the reader needs to know to continue [see essay
template].
[4] Then, I would do the literature review on film inspired tourism – this would synthesise the varies authors
[5] Then, I would do a literature review of the relevant marketing concepts from the e-book [I would introduce
themarketingconcept [e-book] once for clarity].
[6] Then, I would demonstrate the relationship between the two areas of investigation and how it may be applied
[7] Then, I would bring the paper together with an assemblage of conclusions. And include a final concluding
paragraph which would be the overall take away for the reader [To conclude, … marketing practitioners may help
achieve the objectives of the marketing concept …
[8] Lastly, I would ensure that my in text and end text referencing was as specified by ECU
