Assignment Description
This assignment will give an opportunity to the students to investigate and analyse current issues
with ICT systems. Students should select one of the following topics and then investigate the way
that businesses are using the technology chosen.
Students, in groups of three-four (3-4), will prepare a 1,000-words research report based on their
research into the selected topic. This assignment will require each group to research using
resources such as books, magazine, newspaper articles, academic journals, and on the Internet,
then write a specific report. The group also must present their work using PowerPoint slides in a
scheduled week 10/11 lecture. Each group should present for 10 minutes. The presentations need
to be clear and concise.
The purpose of this assignment is to enable students to critically evaluate some of the ICT current
issues and gain some experience of researching, and presenting their findings in a meaningful way.
WRITTEN REPORT
The assignment will take the form of a fact-based academic report. Your aim will be to produce an
opinion about the research. You will have the opportunity to discuss your research with your tutor
in workshop sessions to make sure you are on the right track with your research and report writing.
Your cover page should include a word count.
Preparing a research report means following a formal pattern of investigation, analysis, and fact
finding. Prepare evidence about the topic, discussion, and then conclusion.
The report should use the following format:
Cover page
Create this in Word, It should have the students’ names and student numbers, the lecturers name,
unit details, assignment details, word count and the date the assignment is due.
Abstract
This is NOT an introduction – do NOT describe what you are going to do. The first sentence should
describe the topic being researched. You should provide a brief summary of your main findings and
research so that the person reading the report know its main purpose.

Topic 1 - Recommending Technology Solutions: (Page 54)
People use computers and mobile devices in a variety of fields, including travel, manufacturing, and
more. Although the way people use computers and mobile devices varies, each use involves
hardware, programs and apps, and some type of communications method, such as the Internet or
mobile network.
Do This:
Your team should choose a field in which you all are interested. (for example travel,
manufacturing etc)
Assign individual team members to investigate the following aspects in relation to the
chosen field:
o hardware;
o programs and apps;
o communications methods
Locate user reviews and articles by industry experts.
Each team member should develop a list of related items that may be used.
After the investigation, create a hypothetical business or organization in the field.
Recommend specific hardware, programs or apps, and communications capabilities that
would be best for the network or organization.
Include comparisons of specific items, as well as costs.
The whole team should meet and discuss your findings.
Be sure to summarize your investigations, describe the hypothetical business or
organization, and outline and support your recommendations. (This section will be the
presentation)
Topic 2 - Website Evaluation: (page 106)

includes a menu, nutritional options, and allergy information, and that has regular promotions and
special offers.
Do This:
Your team should evaluate existing fast food and sandwich websites by comparing the
advantages and disadvantages of each.
Assign each member the task of evaluating one chain.

o nutritional information;
o allergy information;
o special offers;
o location information and directions; and
o hours and contact information.
The whole team should meet and discuss your findings.
Summarize your evaluations and rank the websites in terms of their effectiveness. (this
section will be your presentation)
Be sure to include brief explanations supporting your rankings.
Topic 3 - National Security Uses for Technology (page 156)
Technology is an integral part of military operations. Many military research projects use simulators
that resemble civilian computer games. Your company has been contacted by the Department of
Defence for a research project.
Do This:
Your team should split into two sub-teams.
Assign sub-team should select ONE of the following topics to research:
o How have mobile computers and cloud computing affected issues of national
security?
o How can the utilization of microchips worn by soldiers, or wearable computers, be
integrated into civilian use?
The whole team should meet and discuss your findings.
Determine any advantages or disadvantages, as well as any legal ramifications that may
arise. (This section will be the presentation)
Summarize your evaluations be sure to include brief explanations supporting your findings.
Topic 4 - Educational Program and App Effectiveness (page 210)
The principal of the local primary school has recommended that educational apps should play a
major role in the learning process, believing that these apps enable students to learn at their own
pace. Some enable teachers to track an individual student’s progress and understanding.
Do this:
The team should research the use of educational apps.
Each member of your team should choose a different type of app, such as flash cards,
testing, or CBT.
List the advantages and disadvantages of using that type of app.

Topic 5 - Implementing Biometric Security (page 260)
You are the chief technology officer of a large company. You have been reading an article about
computer security that discussed several examples of security breaches, including thieves breaking
into an office and stealing expensive equipment, and a recently terminated employee gaining
access to the office after hours and corrupting data. Because of these incidents, your company
would like to start using biometric devices to increase its security.
Do This:
Your team should research the use of biometric devices to protect equipment and data.
Each member of your team should choose a different type of biometric device, such as:
o fingerprint readers;
o face recognition systems; and
o hand geometry systems.
Find products for each device type, and research costs and user reviews.
Search for articles by industry experts.
The whole team should meet and discuss your findings.
Would you recommend using the biometric device for security purposes? Why or why not?
(This section will be the presentation)
