CONS7200 Project Management Practice Semester 1 (2017) Individual Assignment 2 – HR and Communications Management  Assessment weighting 40% of course work & 40 marks total.  3000 words total as a guideline. Choose a project that you are familiar with. It might be a real project from work experience or simulated project such as those used for Assignments in the Construction Project Management Principles Course (Cons 6100). Focus on the Construction Phase of the project. In the context of your chosen project, at all times appraise the following aspects of the project (Answering Parts A, B & C). Note:  The application of concepts must include specific examples in relation to the project you choose. General discussions should be avoided.  Limit your direct quotes to a maximum of two per page. Copying text directly from literature (is a strict no), please paraphrase. In-text citations are ‘essential’.  For each part of the assignment, aim to choose and analyse a minimum of two tools or techniques found in the literature.  Describe how you would apply the tools, and analyse the tools in terms of their strengths and weaknesses for the focus project. Use theoretical concepts in your descriptions and appraisals. The theoretical concepts must either challenge or support the approach taken in your focus project. Reference and fully cite all found quotes, paraphrased ideas etc. Part A – Team Leadership and Management There are five main schools of management, which can be divided into two subgroups of traditional management and the project management approach. 1. Discuss how the Project Management approach differs from the traditional approach. Analyse the Project Management strengths and weaknesses versus the traditional approach. 2. Analyse the skills required of a Project Manager (PM) to be an effective leader & manager, you are to also explain which of those skills are of importance for managing people and why. 3. Analyse which leadership styles and theories support the PM approach in relation to the project you choose/select.  Include in your analysis how the application of an effective leadership style by the PM may enhance staff motivation. 4. Analyse which motivational theories can help improve the approach a PM takes in relation to the motivation and performance of the Project Team, provide at least 2 examples for each theory discussed.This sections of the report should be 1000 words. Part B – Project Team Effectiveness 1.1 What is a project team (PT) and how does it differ from a traditional team? 1.2 Explain why understanding your stakeholders is important to the success of a PT. Include in your discussion:  What tools can assist you in understanding your stakeholders.  An explanation of how ‘Trust’ can be built and how it influences the success of a project. 1.3 The success of a project can be directly related to the quality, skills and experience of the people working on the project. When building a PT, identify the types of ‘destructive’ and ‘supportive’ roles you need to be aware of, and how you need to manage these using two examples for each category. 1.4 Explain the Tuchman model of team development and how and why it can help a PM form and run a new project team 1.5 Discuss how an understanding of how to create and run a High Performing Team can assist a PM improve the success of a project. Include in your discussion at least three key barriers to building an effective team. 1.6 Explain the purpose and value of a RACI or LRC assist a team perform more effectively (provide an example RACI/LRC for your case study connecting it to your discussion by way of example). This section should be approximately 1000 words long. Part C - Communications Research the topic of Communications Theory and reflect on how it applies to Construction Project Management. Included in your research the following components: 1. Discuss the purpose and value of planning communications in a project. 2. Discuss and analyse one model of communication and explain how it can help improve communication on your chosen project. 3. Distinguish between communication Media and Networks. Ensure to discuss which methods enhance communication and why. 4. For the chosen/selected project referenced in Part B, outline the elements of a basic Communications Management Plan suitable for the construction phases of the project. 5. Included in your analysis what tools and methods you would use to monitor whether communications on site were effective. Relevant information can be sourced from a range of data bases, books, and journals including course resources such as PMBOK and Kerzner.
