Assignment title: Information

1. You have been contacted by a business that does roofing, guttering, house washing, and home repair. Much of their work is done on a one-time basis while they do have maintenance agreements for home or businesses as well. They currently do their record keeping using spreadsheets and word processors. This business has asked you to help it set up a computerized system to use in its work. List ten questions about the system that you will ask the contact person. The questions must be about what the system is to do. These people will not have long terms business plans or ideas about what a system can do so do not ask about those items. Also the questions must not be about who will run the system or the budget or system security. Credit will not be given for insignificant questions. Remember that these potential clients will get their first impression of you from the questions that you ask. 2. You implemented a small computerized system for the receipt of payments for a lawn mowing service. They contract for yard work on both a one-time and recurring basis. This system has been running for some time. Now you have been asked whether the system can be expanded to include sales of gardening and lawn care supplies. Your contact person obviously thinks that this will be a simple enhancement, but, upon reviewing the database structures, you discover that not all the necessary data for this expansion is being captured. You will first need to revise the table structures and provide for the original system to allow input of the necessary data. New screens will be needed for sales and ordering. Write a memo to the contact person explaining these issues and the need to develop these enhancements as a new project at a major additional cost. Answer in detail. One or two sentences will not be adequate. 3. You are supporting a computerized system that is accessed by the use of Web browsers and is built around a SQL Server database. You are not familiar with the structure of the database. You just received a phone call about a functional problem with the system. It sounds as if reports don't always reflect data that has just been entered but the data that is seemingly lost shows up later. Show the steps that you would take to investigate this problem and attempt to solve it. There is no fixed number of steps but be sure to include all the details. This question should not have a brief answer. Do not try to list steps from the book. Tell what you would actually do, concentrating on possible issues with the database. 4. You are a Vice-President in charge of program development. You have just appointed a project team to begin work on a new project. List ten guidelines for working together that you will give to them in their first meeting. Do not talk about program details but about policies for working together. You will not be part of their team but will be their supervisor. Be very specific and use complete sentences. One word answers will not be considered. 5. You are part of a project team. One of its members is having a negative effect on the team by lack of consistent attendance at meetings and by not having assigned studies and other work completed in time for meetings. Some meetings have had a lot of wasted time due to his failure to be prepared. You know that the team will later need his expertise in order to complete the project on time. Tell how you would approach this situation as a team member to attempt to change his behavior. Then tell how you would decide when to simply ask that he be removed from the team, if you believe the situation demands that. Discuss in detail using complete sentences.
