Assignment title: Information

Virtual Private Network Configuration – Assignment 2 The aim of this assignment is • to investigate the simulation of a VPN using Packet Tracer • to implement and evaluate a secure VPN over the Internet using PPTP

VPN Simulation It is not practical to attempt to simulate the exact arrangement used in the laboratory using Packet Tracer, so the first part of the assignment is to download, configure and investigate one of a number of VPN simulations available via the Internet. Gather evidence from the simulation to demonstrate that packets are travelling differently over the VPN tunnel and (where possible) obtain evidence of correct configuration and tunnel usage from your simulation. The marking criteria indicate how a more complex or secure implementation will achieve a higher grade. VPN Implementation

Gather evidence, images by using Wireshark that demonstrates the operation and functionality of the VPN and the services handled by port forwarding. Submission

Your submission must be in the form of a report (in MS Word or PDF format) that is submitted electronically within Blackboard, together with a functioning Packet Tracer simulation file. Your report should include a check list of the Packet Tracer validation and appropriate evidence of the practical operation gathered using eg Wireshark. You should include detailed references to external information sources you have used. You may submit further files eg packet capture if appropriate, but all information should be appropriately identified, analysed and explained within the report. You may zip the files for convenience. Guidance will be given within the assignment section of the Blackboard site for this module. The deadline for submission is Thursday 5th May 2016 at 23:59. After that time the submission facility will be disabled. Feedback will be provided via the Blackboard Gradebook during the week commencing Monday 23rd May 2016.

Assessment criteria Your assignment will be assessed according to the following criteria:

VPN Simulation Packet Tracer simulation of a functioning VPN. Simulations that (correctly) implement more complex networks will attract a higher mark. Any network that includes dynamic routing over the VPN or includes WAN elements would be considered to be a more complex network. 30% VPN Implementation

Network implemented. Appropriate evidence of correct operation to include packet capture software. Evidence of inter-operation between 2 benches and the services handled by NAT/port forwarding. 50% Report The quality of the submission as a technical report, conveying the information effectively in a professional style. 20%
