DeakinCollege COM 102 – Introduction to Systems Analysis Individual Project Trimester 3, 2015 Due Date: Submission requirements: Value: Week 12 – Sunday, 24 January 11:55 pm Submit on line via a link on the Portal (in week 12) 10% of trimester assessment Objective: Learn to apply structured business analysis tools and techniques to analyse business problem. In the early phase of the project (Analysis) you will review the current operation of Cohen's newsagency and create a set of diagrams that will assist the newsagency with the next stage of the project that is outside the scope of this task (Design). Case Study Cohen's newsagency is the largest in Chadford, a town of 13,000 people. It is the only one to make deliveries. The only other way for the citizens to get newspapers is to buy them in milk bars. Cohen's stock various provincial papers nearly all of which get to town too late to be in the rounds. Melbourne morning dailies are in the rounds as is the Chadford Clarion. 800 households in Chadford get one or more newspapers delivered and four boys are employed to do this. They work in regions called North, South, East and West. Each region has about 200 households. The boys carry their loads on specially designed tray tricycles as the load is too great for a standard bicycle. If you move to Chadford you go to Cohen's and open an account with them. The business is run by Mrs. Cohen. She will take a blank card and fill, out your particulars on it. These are: CUSTOMER-NAME + ADDRESS + NAMES-OF-NEWSPAPERS-REQUIRED + START-DATE + AMOUNT-OWING + END-DATE + STATUS. Mrs. Cohen then takes one of four schedules of delivery and amends it. A schedule of delivery is a set of paper sheets on which are written: STREET-NAME + HOUSE-NUMBER + NEWSPAPERS-REQUIRED for each street in North, South, East and West respectively. The paper sheets in the schedule of delivery are in the order of the streets, by region, comprising the routes which are followed by the boys. Each morning at 5:30am, the papers are delivered by truck to Cohen's. Mrs. Cohen, having arisen at 4:30am, breakfasted and fed her chickens, unpacks the load, separates the papers into stacks of "Ages", "Australians", "Herald Suns" and "Clarions" and then inserts the special magazines and advertising material into the papers which carry them. These magazines and other material always have to be manually inserted because they come from different printers. At 6am, the boys arrive. Now begins the task of separating the papers into region order. Mrs. Cohen and the boys work from the delivery schedule sheets piling the papers into four stacks, each stack being four piles for each region, in street order of delivery. The papers aren't mixed up. That is, the stacks aren't a mixture of items. The delivery schedule sheets are used to determine who gets what. The sheets are taken by the boys on their routes and the preliminary stacking process is used to ensure that each boy has the correct number of papers to affect his delivery. COM 102 –Individual Project – Trimester 3, 2015 1 At last by 6:45am, the tricycles are loaded and the boys set off. If you decide to change your newspaper, present yourself at the store, or telephone. Mrs. Cohen will change your card and modify the delivery schedule. If you want to cancel for a known period, Mrs. Cohen can change STATUS from "on" to "off" and modifies START-DATE. If you decide to cancel for an unknown period, say an overseas trip, Mrs. Cohen changes STATUS from "on" to "off" and does not modify START-DATE. At the end of the day, Mrs. Cohen amends delivery schedules for the next day. At the end of the month, Mrs. Cohen prepares the invoices and posts them. As Payments are received, AMOUNT-OWING is modified by Mrs. Cohen. All these things are manual. Specific Tasks: 1. Identify the main business processes for the Cohen's newsagency booking system. You will need to document at least 4 different processes. 2. Draw a context diagram for the Cohen's newsagency booking system. 3. Using the process documentation from part a, create a data flow diagram (DFD) level 0 for the Cohen's newsagency booking system, including all the high level processes. (You need at least 3 high level processes). 4. Decompose at least two high level processes in part c into DFD level 1 fragments. 5. Create the user interface design for adding a new customer to the system. What to submit?
