Tasks:
1. Select aNew Zealand organisations that you can easily gather secondary data for
2. Go back to the tasks from Part A and apply all of the questions to this organisation,
according to the information that you can gather answer you need to answer the following:
a. How do they evidence following the definition of management?
b. What is the main purpose of this organisation?
c. What levels of management are obvious within this organisation?
d. What evidence can you find of the four functions of management?
e. What big decisions has this organisation made in the last 2 years (select one) and
what evidence is there of the approaches to decision making that were used?
f. Define what the focus/es is/are of this organisation, in regards to;
i. Task focus
ii. People focus
iii. Efficiency and effectiveness
g. Describe how you see the organisation has evolved their management philosophies
over time
3. Create a 3-minute presentation for the class in an electronic format of your choice that
highlights the answers to the above questions for the organisation that you have selected
and post to a forum in Moodle, showing all necessary referencing links
4. Comment on at least two other presentations that have been uploaded to Moodle, in this
comment you will express what this has taught you about management in different
organisations
Note - Part B requires you to apply the knowledge from part A to a specific organisation. Your
work will be portrayed in an electronic presentation format, you can use PowerPoint or other
presentation software. The length of this will depend upon the extent of your work, there is no word
or page limit, but it has to be sufficiently brief to be able to be presented in three minutes. I do
recommend that you use brief bullet points in the main part of the slide, and add some explanatory
notes under the main slide. I would suggest that you need between six to ten slides, but it could be
briefer than this. You are also required to make comments on the forum regarding other student's
presentations.

a. Define 'management' and the 'purpose of organisations'
b. List the four management levels that make up a simple structure(that are common to
most organisations)and write a brief explanation of each of these
c. List and summarise the four major'functions' that are common to all management
d. Provide a description of the three approaches that managers can use to make decisions
in organisations
2. Write a description of the development of management philosophies, in completing this task
you will;
a. Name the original theorists that introduced the following management concepts;
i. Task focus
ii. People focus
iii. Efficiency and effectiveness
b. Summarise what each of them are and what industries they strongly align to.
c. Follow the evolution of these concepts from the time they were first discussed until now
naming major contributors to these theories.
