You should answer the question below using your own words, i.e. paraphrasing any references you use, not copying the text. Please use in-text referencing and list all references at the end of your answer. If you only use your Nervous System practical notes or lecture slides, there is no need to reference them but please add a statement to that effect at the end of your answer.
Read the task below and construct your answer (maximum of 300 words) in a Word document.
HERE IS YOUR TASK:
Thomas is hospitalised after sustaining a spinal injury that has paralysed him below the waist. Whilst he has retained his patellar (knee jerk) reflexes after his injury, he couldn’t consciously sense when his patellar tendons were tapped by the hammer and was unable to move his legs voluntarily.
Explain why Thomas is unable to sense or feel his patellar tendons being tapped and cannot voluntarily move his legs, even though he demonstrates a reflex knee jerk response to the tapping.
Your answer will involve information about reflex, sensory and motor pathways. Ensure that you name all relevant nervous system structures within each pathway, in the correct order, and briefly describe how information travels along and between neurons.
Do not include specifics surrounding the spinal levels affected, plexuses or dermatomes
