Purpose: This assessment is designed to allow students to research current alternative theoretical approaches in strategic management, and evaluate them in terms of suggested benefits, but also identify and explain their limitations. 3. Topic:
 Alternative Approaches to Strategic Management 4. Task Details: Students are to research and identify three different approaches to Strategic Management, and compare and contrast them, particular focussing on suggested benefits, implementation issues and limitations. The currently common approach is to view the competitive approach of analysing the SWOT - reviewing the environmental factors and selecting a generic strategy to provide a competitive advantage. Other approaches include the stakeholder approach - such as Hewlett Packard - HP. The Sustainable development approach - such as MOL group The Dynamic capabilities approach - such as IBM. You may find other approaches you wish to discuss. Students should identify at least
evaluate the success of the approach. Students should draw some supported conclusions as to the viability of each approach, and present their research, analysis and conclusions in a professionally presented report. 5. Research requirements Students need to support their analysis with support from the text and a minimum of 10 suitable, reliable, current and academically acceptable sources – this should include at least 4 academic journal articles. Students should demonstrate an understanding of the validity of other sources and the information gained from them, e.g. the information found on a corporate website is only like to present the positive elements. The articles in Section 2.6 above may be used if relevant, but better research marks will be awarded to students who do their own independent relevant research. 6. Presentation: Title page, executive summary, table of contents, appropriate headings and sub-headings, recommendations, reference list (Harvard – Anglia style), attachments if relevant.
