Here the public realm operates not only around spaces but through them. It extends beyond the boundary of a site, and is where the diversity of people and their values interact. This design studio will require you to engage and explore this complex relationship between architecture and the urban context. It will also require you to expand on conceptual, physical and perceived information, toward the generation and development of a specific architectural response. Public spaces, by their very nature, must constantly engage with their surroundings as well as fulfil their own internal ambitions. It could be argued that all architecture must do this, and that along with their internal duties they project their influence on their surroundings. However, public buildings also project their influence on us. They frame our experience and influence our behaviour. They embed themselves in our awareness and reaffirm who we are, and, who we are as a community. This is the context we will be exploring. Enjoy, This Unit Guide provides you with the key information about this Unit. For the best chance of success, you should read it very carefully and refer to it frequently throughout the trimester. Your Unit site (accessed in DeakinSync) also provides information about your rights and responsibilities. We will assume you have read this before the Unit commences, and we expect you to refer to it throughout the trimester. WHO IS THE UNIT TEAM? It comprises a series of set exercises that feed into a design problem. Studio is the central component in the education of an architect. It is the place where students do and discuss their designs. No designer works in isolation. Due to its particular complexity, urban design requires specific and continuous collaboration and cooperation. Students are expected to attend all studio sessions with all the necessary equipment. Unit development in response to student feedback Every trimester, we ask students to tell us, through eVALUate, what helped and hindered their learning in each Unit. You are strongly encouraged to provide constructive feedback for this Unit when eVALUate opens (you will be emailed a link). Student evaluation feedback will be taken into consideration when delivering this unit. In previous trimesters students have told us that they found the unit engaging and enjoyed their learning experience. As a result efforts have been made to maintain the quality of this unit. Further enhancements have also been made, including: ● A revised project brief and site context ● Updated class material ● A weekly design and production schedule ● Revised studio activities and format If you have any concerns about the Unit during the trimester, please contact the unit teaching team - preferably early in the trimester - so we can discuss your concerns, and make adjustments, if appropriate. Learning in each unit builds towards the course learning outcomes. Your Unit Learning Outcomes Each Unit in your course is a building block towards these Graduate Learning Outcomes - not all Units develop and assess every Graduate Learning Outcome (GLO). These are the Learning Outcomes (ULO) for this Unit At the completion of this Unit, successful students can: Deakin Graduate Learning Outcomes ULO1 Explain the architecture’s role in the establishment of a sense of place through designing in a responsive and responsible manner. GLO1, GLO4 ULO2 Create an architectural narrative through the application of critical thinking practices to establish a position of the value of architectural design within the built environment. GLO1, GLO4, GLO6 ULO3 Communicate an understanding of design within urban contexts in written, visual and oral formats. GLO1, GLO2 ULO4 Explain the complex relationships between the public and the private in architecture within an urban context. GLO2, GLO4 ULO5 Create a design synthesis by engaging in ideation through the exploration of form-making using a range of different communication techniques. GLO1, GLO2, GLO3 ULO6 Explain the tectonic nature of architecture through engagement with sectional analysis, with particular focus on interior design, materiality and structure. GLO1, GLO2, GLO4 ASSESSING YOUR ACHIEVEMENT OF THE UNIT LEARNING OUTCOMES Overview In brief, these are the assessment tasks for this Unit (details below): Urban and site analysis report 30%, design project and presentation 50%, design reflective folio 20%Deakin University, Faculty of Science, Engineering and Built Environment SRD264 Studio 04: Publicscapes - Trimester 2, 2017 23 June 2017 Page 5 of 10 Summative assessments (tasks that will be graded or marked) NOTE: It is your responsibility to keep a backup copy of every assignment where it is possible (eg written/digital reports, essays, videos, images). In the unusual event that one of your assignments is misplaced, you will need to submit the backup copy. Any work you submit may be checked by electronic or other means for the purposes of detecting collusion and/or plagiarism. When you are required to submit an assignment through CloudDeakin, you should receive an email to your Deakin email address confirming that it has been submitted. You should check that you can see your assignment in the Submissions view of the Assignment folder after upload, and check for, and keep, the email receipt for the submission. - Summative assessment task 1 Urban, site, and design analysis report Brief description of assessment task: This assessment task requires students to conduct investigations into a specific context, site, and project brief. This will involve the representation of both physical and perceived information, along with research, analysis, and an initial response to the design brief. Detail of student output: This is an individual assessment task containing all activities and deliverables of the first 5 weeks. Students are required to collate and graphically communicate their explorations through a folio based report including concise reflections. The design brief will provide further information regarding the specific formatting requirements of this document. Weight (% total mark for unit): 30%, graded. This task assesses your achievement of these Unit Learning Outcome(s) ULO1: Explain architecture’s role in the establishment of a sense of place through designing in a responsive and responsible manner. ULO3: Communicate an understanding of design within urban contexts in written, visual and oral formats. ULO4: Explain the complex relationships between the public and the private in architecture within an urban context. This task assesses your achievement of these Graduate Learning Outcome(s) GLO1 – through the student’s ability to apply their understanding of design to an urban context. GLO2 – through student’s ability to communicate their understanding of the urban context using their visual and written communication skills. GLO4 – through student’s ability to critically analyse the urban context and forming their own position in preparation for their design work. What early feedback will student get, how and when?: Students are to attend and engage with studio sessions each week, where the weekly design and development activities will be discussed. It is advised that a record of progress and feedback is made by each student. Students will be provided with a summative feedback sheet for assessment tasks identifying levels of achievement in relation to specified criteria. When and how to submit your work Week 5 - Class day at 9am AEST. Digital submission to be made via CloudDeakin.
