Tutorial Assignment 1 (100 marks, weighted 10%) 301022 ACAE, Spring 2017 School of Computing, Engineering and Mathematics 301022 Advanced Computer Aided Engineering TUTORIAL ASSIGNMENT 1 Softcopy Due on Wednesday, Week 4, 9th August, 2017 Instruction: You must finish each question with a step-by-step manner to clearly show your problem-solving procedure. Microsoft EXCEL is recommended to be utilised to replace hand calculation. Only electronic version is accepted for submission via the vUWS site. Question 1: General FEA (10 marks) Write down the general steps in a typical finite element analysis procedure when solving an engineering problem (10 marks). Question 2: Truss Element Model (40 marks) The finite element model of a plane truss shown in the following figure is composed of 4 hollow members having a rectangle B20 mm × H40 mm cross section and a thickness of 5 mm and the modulus of elasticity E = 210 GPa. You should a) develop an FE model using only 4 truss elements and compute the nodal displacements in the global coordinate system for the loads shown as well as all the reactions at each support; and b) use ANSYS to conduct an FEA for validation using the same FE model.Tutorial Assignment 1 (100 marks, weighted 10%) 301022 ACAE, Spring 2017 Question 3: Frame Element Model (50 marks) Use a 2-frame element model to analyse the frame structure depicted below subjected to a uniformly-distributed loading. The two frame members are of identical material properties and rectangular cross-section as well as the same height. You are requested: a) to determine the unknown displacements at the point B, the reaction forces at points A and C and the maximum stresses in the frame and b) to apply ANSYS to conduct an FEA and compare with the results obtained from a) for validation using the same FE model. + 0.q (kN). + q (lb/ft), in which q is the last three digits of your student identification number. + 0.q (kN), in which q is the last three digits of your student identification number.
