Portfolio tasks
Due: Weeks 2, 4, 6, 8, 10 - Friday 11:59pm through Turnitin
Assessment weighting: 20%
Duration: 200 words each
Assessment task 1: Portfolio (5 submissions)
• The portfolio task requires you to complete an analysis on a specific text of your choosing in around 200 words. Specifically how does your chosen text represent your chosen theme? You will type your response and submit it via the Turnitin link in the Assessments folder. For each submission you will choose one text from the following genres, and apply it to the week’s theme. You will also be presenting your thoughts in class prior to the submission, while this is not assessable it will provide you with valuable feedback that will assist you with your portfolio.
• Choose one text from a genre each week. You cannot use the same genre twice
o Song/Poetry
o News article
o Short story/Novel
o Film/Play
o Image
• Complete a 200 word reflection on how it represents the following themes
o Week 2 – Morality
o Week 4 - Love
o Week 6 – Racism
o Week 8 – Women
o Week 10 – Death
To be successful in this assessment you will need to:
• This is not a description of the text, you need to interpret, analyse and discuss the text
o Assume the person marking it has read it, use specific quotes that support you interpretation
• Follow academic conventions (double spaced, header/footer, academic language)
• Submit through Turnitin
• Provide an accurate Harvard reference for your chosen text (according to the style guide)
• Demonstrate critical thinking and analysis
• Use relevant, specific and concise quotes/paraphrasing
• Texts presented by the teacher cannot be used
What does critical thinking look like?
For university study it is not enough to simply summarise your chosen text, you must critically engage with the chosen text. 200 words is not a lot and you cannot afford to waste it story telling. This means you need to do the following:
• Ask ‘why’ questions. For example:
o Why does the author use this image?
o Why do they reference that event?
o Why do they use a certain person as an example?
• What is not being said?
o Has the author left something out?
o Is there another perspective that is not being considered?
o Is there another possible interpretation besides the obvious?
o Remember you don’t need to agree with the author’s perspective; if you don’t justify why; if you do, JUSTIFY WHY!
• What about the author?
o Do they have a bias?
o Do they have an agenda?
o When/where/why was it written? Have things changed since then?
• What about the receiver?
o What about the receiver might influence their interpretation?
o How might different cultures, genders, ages, or social classes receive this text differently?
Important!
Remember the above is not a list of questions or a checklist you need to do every week. These are questions that are important to consider each week, and then decide which ones are the most relevant to your chosen text. Once again, 200 words is not a lot, so you need to use them wisely on things that are highly relevant.
