SMB4201 Systems Analysis and Design
Semester 2, 2017
Assessment item 2 – Case study
This case study assesses students’ ability to apply theoretical learning to practical, real world
situations. In this assessment students, must form project groups of 3 to 4 students. Each
group must prepare a report answering the questions related to the case study tasks.
Date due: Week 5
Value: 35%
The Tasks
You have to read the Smart Medical System (SMS) case study and answer the followings:
1. Based on the project requirements and scope, discuss whether the project schedule is
reasonable? Why or why not?
2. Discuss the different types of SDLC methodology explaining the operations for each phase.
3. In your opinion and based on project requirements which type of SDLC methodology
(predicative, adaptive or mixed) more suit for the SMS project development. Justify your
answer.
4. Discus in details the activities required at each phase of the SDLC for developing the SMS
project.
5. Propose four types of techniques, models and tools can be used to support the activities and
tasks of SMS development.
6. Suppose you are the IT director at the CSD, and you want to hire a joiner systems analyst. The
person of this position will support other senior systems analysts on the SMS project. Write an
advertisement that would appear in the local newspapers and online. In this advertisement, you
should list desired skills, experience, and educational requirements.
Case Study: Smart Medical System (SMS)
ACT medical centre (AMC) and Canberra Software Development (CSD) centre are developing Smart
Medical System (SMS). Project staff will include analyst, designer, programmer and tester from both
centres. Two technical staff members from each centre have been assigned initially. Two softwarePage 2 of 5
developers will assign to develop the programs using OOP. In addition, one part time nurse will
assign from the medical centre. The SMS project have to consider the followings:
- Allow doctor, nurse, receptionist and management staff at the AMC to view patient history
and schedule appointments using any computer inside or outside the centre.
- Upgrade the centre webpage to allow the patients to book online for seeing any doctor.
- Develop a mobile application using android studio that allow patients to pay bills and book
online.
The AMC and CSD anticipate a five-month development schedule for an initial version of the server
software and android-based client-side software. There month period for the design and code
development and finally two month for the testing.
Report Layout
The analysis report should be organised using the following headings and guidelines:
1. A Cover Title Page
2. Introduction
a. Should clearly define the aims and objectives of the project in the report
b. Explain what contents will be covered in the report
3. Discussion on the project schedule
a. Project schedule is reasonable? Why or why not?
4. Types of SDLC methodology.
5. Selection of suitable SDLC methodology (predicative, adaptive or mixed) for the SMS with
justification.
6. The SDLC detailed activities for the SMS.
7. Techniques, models and tools to support the SMS development activities.
8. Joiner systems analyst advertisement
9. Conclusions and Recommendations
a. A summary of your findings and your recommendations as to whether or not the project
should continue/ how to continue
