This day and age, technology has become a significant part of our lives. Whether it's building a new house, grocery shopping, or doing your university assignment last minute, aspects of our everyday lives have been impacted in some way by the improvements in technology. However, today, I will be focusing on two aspects, communication, and production, and how these have affected on a global process.
Humans, by nature, are social creatures. We have social structures that revolve around our families, friends, workmates, and we spend almost all of our time with at these groups of people. And with the increase and advancement in technology, how we interact and communicate with others has undergone a shift. This shift has made social networking the new method of communication. Primarily used by the younger generation, who have practically grown up with this fast paced change and development, these social networking sites open up a wide variety of avenues an average person can utilise when socialising online. The younger generation use this new world of communication to stay in touch with friends, make plans, get to know people better, and present oneself to others easily without much hassle, just “a tap on a screen”. All of these new methods of communication not only include messages or calls to someone else. If you have someone living in another state or country, and for whatever reason you can’t call them without picking up extra fines, social networking can allow you to talk with that person, “face to face”, that way keeping your relationship intact while the other one is in a different place. In addition, the internet has a plethora of information that you would not find in a library or video store, or at least you would not want to be seen with such material. But you can remain anonymous on the internet and just search away and do want you want without people finding out its you. However, in saying this, some people use the anonymity of the World Wide Web, and do truly do some unspeakable things. Cyber bullying has become one of the worst methods of bullying this world has seen in a while. Because of the ease of communication that we feel is so good this day and age, and it is, it also means that people can attack others just as easy, without being close to them, without even leaving home. Staying safe in their rooms while making someone feel unsafe in theirs.
Good and bad, improvements in communication technology have changed the way humans operate in the world, but it’s not the only thing that has changed our lives. Improvements in production, and by extent, mass production, have allowed us to become more mobile with better methods of transport, as well as our buildings; our houses, workplaces, shelters. Improvements in transport have been happening continuously since the Middle Ages. First, the horse and carriage, then the first car, then people began mass producing cars, until today, where we have cars, motorbikes, scooters, skateboards, bicycles. In addition to land vehicles, ships and aeroplanes have changed as well. For the aeroplane, it started off as a contraption that could not safely fit even 10 people. Nowadays, we have aeroplanes that can fit 700+, with televisions, bars, music, waitstaff. Same with sea vessels. Originally, it was either a simple row boat or large ship, like the classic pirate ship. Today, wile there aren’t many sailing ships, huge cargo freights carrying massive loads dock trade channels, and huge cruise ships litter the sea, decked out with restaurants, bars, bedrooms, televisions, wifi, you name it. Not only do these differ so much from their historical ancestors in terms of technology, they also allow for faster travelling between nations, allowing more of a global interaction. Same with transport, buildings have undergone a change. Changing from simple 1 or 2 story houses in little villages, huge buildings in cities dot the city skyline, and more building spreading for kilometres. From huge work buildings, to apartments, to schools, restaurants, etc. these have shown us the capability of the human mind and body. However, as with communication, there is also a downfall with all of this production. Mainly, pollution and endangering animals. With almost all of our vehicles and machinery running of petrol, the pollution we as a society expel into our environment is astounding. Not only that, in order to make some of these buildings or vehicles, it calls for us to endanger the habitat of some creatures. Clearing land, making sure it’s suitable for buildings, also makes sure that animals don’t try and live where they are building, and they’re having to be continuously pushed back to different areas.
The development of these technologies have allowed our society to grow and flourish in a unique way. With the improvements to communication and production technology, we have been able to become more of a single global community with little pockets of individuality, instead of several small nations that wouldn’t communicate with each other.
