Managing Infrastructure
Assessment Structure: Wiki
Individual or Group: Group
Learning outcomes assessed: This assessment task is designed to test your achievement of learning
outcomes 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7 & 8
Word limit: 3000 words +/- 10%
Weighting: This assessment task contributes 30% to your final grade
Due Date & Submission: This assessment is due by: 11.59 p.m. (EST), 14/5/2017. This assessment task
must be submitted inside the Assessment 3 submission link on the Blackboard site.
Task details: Your group is tasked to construct a Wiki on the broad topic of Managing Infrastructure.
The wiki is to be built inside the nominated Wiki space on Blackboard.
Important: We will look into the basics of Wiki creation in your learning activities.
You may use a company you presently work for (or have previously worked for) as a case study or a
well-known company such as Microsoft, Telstra, Amazon, eBay or others. You may even consider a
non-traditional company such as the Red Cross or the Country Fire Authority and explain how they
manage their infrastructure in a humanitarian crisis.
Your team should keep the word limit for this assessment in mind when deciding on which of the
many possible aspects of managing infrastructure (pieces of hardware/software/services, vendor
management, risk and change management, benefits realisation, and Socio-political and Geo-political
considerations)
The wiki should be analytical, and must draw on theory to frame its discussion of the concepts
covered. This means that just describing a piece of infrastructure is an inadequate response to this
task, and will not be rewarded in the marking structure.
Although you may wish to, your team will quickly see you cannot cover all aspects and a clear and
concise overview will be required.
As a guide, to imaging what your Managing Infrastructure wiki will look like, consider any Wikipedia
page.

Your team’s constructed Wiki should resemble a ‘Wikipedia’ of content (text, images,
links and references) including:

Team member details (Student ID’s, Names)
An introduction to the Wiki describing its purpose and what it contains.
In-depth description of IT infrastructure
In-depth discussion of issues related to managing IT infrastructure.
o Managing vendors, Managing benefits, Managing costs, risk, and other issues your
team feel are relevant.
o Your analysis should at least address the following questions related to your topic:
What are some of the key pieces of infrastructure for your case organisation?
How does your case organisation’s management of the infrastructure reflect
the theory you have studied?
Why is the process of managing the infrastructure so complex?
What can be suggested to reduce the complexity of managing the
infrastructure for your case organisation?
o A suggested approach is to divide up the topics you wish to cover in your wiki into
tasks for individual team members.

Conclusion or Summary section which wraps up the topic.
Reference List (a minimum of 15 references required in Harvard Style)
Be imaginative and innovative in your Wiki design!
Further guidance on this assessment will be provided in weekly learning activities.
Referencing
You must use the Harvard Referencing style throughout your assessment and include an accurate
reference list at the end of the Wiki. Please refer to the Resources Folder on Blackboard for a copy of
the Harvard Quick Guide.
Submission Requirements
Assessments must be submitted via the Blackboard unit site through the ‘Assessments’ facility.
Do not email the assessment to either the convenor or tutor.
Keep a MS Word backup of your Wiki submissions. If your assessment goes astray, whether
your fault or ours, you will be required to re-produce it.
It is expected that all work submitted, will have been edited for spelling, grammar and clarity.
The word count does not include references or appendices.
