Assignment title: Information
• Supply the background of the paper in a way that everyone can understand. Just because you are working in a technical discipline does not allow you to write boring technical gibberish!• Provide a reason for people to read your paper. Who cares?• Provide the big picture. Describe the overall problem you will be researching in this class and how it relates to the research methodology class.• Describe how this fits within the larger scope of your field/major.• Make it personal. What is YOUR motivation to write this paper/solve this problem?• Provide definitions of commonly used terms• Clear statement of the problem(s): What is the question that you need to answer?• Why it should be solved (justification)• What will be deliverables? Be specific• Type of work: behavioral research, building an artifact, applied study • Delimits: What will this paper NOT do.• Hypothesis (if any) to be tested- articulated hypotheses and/or questions. This may not apply to all research.• A high level diagram of the work may be highly useful (what are the outputs –deliverables, what are the inputs, etc)• Quick overview of literature. Start with an analysis of 2-3 literature reviews of this topic. How do the authors outline the literature? You may wish to include a table, chart or diagram to show the framework(s) used to organize the literature. • What lens will you use to focus your research? Here you will agree or disagree with the topic breakdown done by the authors of the literature review.• Provide additional articles that you have found that support your analysis of the initial literature reviews, your research lens, or which provide additional depth to your understanding. You should have 5-10 articles reviewed here.• Based upon your reading of the literature, why has the problem not been solved? • A Study Design (based on behavioral or design science research) that shows: o The main results expected o How the results will be produced o Focus is on "How" you will solve the problem" • You will develop a plan for your work in your research methodology class that consists of the following: o What will be the overall process (procedures, technologies) will you use to answer the questionso What will be the steps of the process (decompose and subdivide) o What will be the anticipated results of the steps (data collected, data analyzed, artifacts built)o What will be done in each step and what will not be doneo What type of resources will be needed in each step o How will the validity and quality of results be assured o The setting (environment in which the results will be used) should be also discussed o May also include specific details about all aspects of experiments, data collection and interpretation, sampling, ethical issues, etc Proposed Work Plan (1-2 pages) • When do you expect to start and to finish? (fall, spring, summer) • Detailed plan of work with major activities, target dates for completion, etc. You are adding a clear and unambiguous timelines to your study design • You may use any of the project management tools that help you explain what you will be doing, i.e., a high level Gant chart.
