1) Assessment Details: The test will be a 50 minute in-class closed-book test which will feature short answer questions relating to key concepts from the first two weeks of the course. It comprises 15% of the assessment in this course. The purpose of the test is to enable you to achieve outcomes in knowledge, skill and application of both across the designated learning outcomes as specified above. 2) Criteria used to grade this task: Mark allocation and format will be specified on the test paper itself. You will be assessed on the basis of: • understanding of the material examined; • ability to support your answers with principles of law; • communication skill. 3) Task Assessor: Lecturer 4) Suggested time to devote to this task: 6 hours revision time 5) Submission details: Test will be held during lecture in week 5 (Wednesday, 20 April 2016); lecturer will collect papers. 6) Feedback and return of work: Marked test papers handed back in class within two weeks of sitting the test; lecturer will be available to provide in person feedback on performance. Task 2: Assignment 1) Assessment Details: In the assignment, you will be asked to examine the legal implications of a given scenario. Your general approach should be to work through each question and consider arguments and legal authorities (both statutory and common law) which impact on the question. The task comprises 35% of the assessment in this course. The length of the assignment must not be over 2,500 words. The purpose of the assignment is to enable you to achieve outcomes in knowledge, skill and application of both across the designated learning outcomes as specified above. 2) Criteria used to grade this task: you will be assessed on the extent to which you have: (a) answered the set question; (b) used good English expression, correct spelling, good punctuation and grammar and have proof read your work; (c) used good logic and structure; (d) been able to identify, set out and discuss relevant legal issues, legal principles and cases, as appropriate; (e) used statutes and cases to support your arguments, as appropriate; (f) analysed, argued or discussed as required by the task questions; and (g) engaged in legal research and found, read and used resources other than the text book – note the library's law guide (and database resources) available at: http://libguides.federation.edu.au/law 3) Task Assessor: Lecturer 4) Suggested time to devote to this task: 38 hours 5) Submission details: Submission of the assignment is due at the end of teaching week 9 (Friday, 20 May 2016); Submission will be online via Moodle. 6) Feedback and return of work. Assessment will be by your lecturer who will provide written feedback on your assignment by the end of week 12. Assessment Task 3: Examination 1) Assessment Details: The purpose of the final examination is to test your knowledge and understanding of part of the content of the course as well as your legal and written communication skills. The examination will be 3 hours in length with reading time of 10 minutes. All topics taught in this subject may be examinable. Further information concerning the examination will be provided towards the end of the teaching period. The exam comprises 50% of the assessment in this course. The exam questions posed will be similar to those considered in classes, and will include case study problems. The purpose of the examination is to enable you to achieve outcomes in knowledge, skill and application of both across the designated learning outcomes as specified above. 2) Criteria used to grade this task: You will be assessed on your: • knowledge and understanding of the topics examined; • ability to clearly convey that knowledge and understanding in answering the relevant question; • ability to identify the legal issues and to examine the different legal arguments that could be presented; and • ability to argue a point of view, using legal principles and cases to support the arguments put forward. 3) Task Assessor: Lecturer 4) Suggested time to devote to this task: 30 hours revision time 5) Submission details: The examination will be held during the exam period following the end of the semester.
